THOMAS W. \VELLS, OF GUNN CITY, MISSOURI.
FASTENlNG FOR EGG-CARRIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,619, dated August 18, 1885. Application filed April 2, 1885. tModel.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. WELLS, of Gunn City, in the county of Cass and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Egg-Carriers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved fastening to secure the covers or lids to the egg cases or carriers, to provide convenient means for detachingthe lids from the cases, and to prevent the ends of the cases from being strained outwardly.
The invention consists of an egg-carrier provided with a springcatch or look to secure the lid to the case or unlocking and detach ing the lid from the case; of beveled cleats attached to the case and corresponding beveled cl 'ats attached to the lid to prevtnt the ends of the eggcase from being strained laterally.
The invention also consists in various parts and details, hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved egg-carrier, showing the lid attached to the ease and ready for shipment. Fig. 2 is an end view ofthe lid or cover detached from the case, and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on the lines as m of Fig. 1.
The case or box A is provided on its two ends with cleats B, which are beveled on their upper sides and extend across the said ends of the case A. The cleats B are each provided, near their middle on the outer side, with two vertical grooves or recesses, a.
To the cover or lid 0 is attached, on its outer edge on the under side, the cleats D, beveled on their lower edge to correspond to the bevels formed on the cleat B. The said cleats G are each provided with a transverse groove or are placed in the transverse groove Z) and fastened by staples H, and the upper part of vertical sides F F are loosely embedded in the grooves 0.
The loop G of spring-catch E- reaches under the lower edge of cleat B, thereby locking the lid 0 to case A. By placing the finger on the inner side of the loop G and exerting an outward pressure the springcatch is pulled out from under the cleat B and lifted out of grooves a, thereby unlocking the lid 0 from the case A. The spring-catch, being embedded in the grooves a, b, and 0, leaves no projection on the face of the cleats, and also prevents a side movement of the lid or cover.
The beveled edges of the cleats D of cover 0 fit closely over the ends of the case and in the corresponding bevels of cleats B on box A, thereby preventinga lateral strain on the ends of box A, and also preventing the cleats D from being warped when the cover 0 is attached to the case A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an egg-carrier, the case A, having the beveled cleats B, in combination with the cover or lid 0, having the beveled cleats D, and the spring-catch E, substantially as shown and described.
2. The springcatch E, formed ofa wire bent at its middle to form a loop, G, and extending outward and upward to form the vertical sides F F, the horizontal arms F F at right angles to the said sides, and each terminating in an attaching end bent inward at right angles to said horizontal arms, substantially as set forth. 7
3. In an egg-carrier, the case A, the beveled cleats B, having the groove a, in combination with the lid 0, the beveled cleats D, having the grooves b and c, and the spring catch E, substantially as shown and described.
4. In an egg-carrier, the box or case A, provided with the beveled cleats B, having the grooves a, in combination with the cover or lid 0, provided with the beveled cleats D, having the grooves b and c, and the spring-catch E, fastened by staples H, substantially as herein shown and described.
THOMAS WV. WELLS.
