EGG CASE PASTENER.
No. 885,598. Patented July 8, 1888.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
XVILLIAM M. CASTLIO, OF MECHANIOSVILLE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF THREE FOURTHS TO LEE D. STEWVART AND CHILDS F. STEWART, OF SAME PLACE, AND FRANCIS H. KRENNING, JR, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
EGG CASE FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,593, dated July 3, 1888.
Serial No. 266,797, (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that 1, WILL AM M. Onsrnro, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mechanicsville, in the county of St. Charles and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Egg-Case Fasteners; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to box-fasteners, and has for its object the provision of a simple and convenient means for fastening the lids or covers on boxes, crates,&c., in an effieient and expeditious manner.
The improvement consists in having one end of the lid or cover notched in its end to receive the shank of nails or kindred devices at one end of the box or crate, the heads of said nails or devices overlapping the sides of the notches to hold the cover or lid down, and in having the other end of the lid or cover provided with a shank which is adapted to enter an opening in a bottom on the corresponding end of the box or crate,and in having a springcatch to engage with and lock the said shank. The notched end of the cover or lid is depressed around theedgcs of the notches sufficiently far to receive the heads of the nails or like devices, which will come about flush with the top of the cover when fitted in the said notches, and is re-enforced by a metal strip, to prevent the heads of the nails pulling through the reduced portion of the cover. The improvement further consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement and coinbiuation of parts, which hereinafter will be more fully describedand claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box or crate provided with my improved fastener;
Fig. 2, an end view, the lower portion being broken away, of the box; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of one end of the box on the line X X of Fig. 1, looking down; Fig. 4, a vertical pressed opposite the notches to strengthen the section of one end of the box on the line Y Y 50 of Fig. 1.
The box or crate A is of ordinary construction, and the cover orlid B is provided at one end with the notches b b and at the other end with the depending shank O. The notches b 5 are adapted to receive the shanks d of nails or like devices secured to the box or crate, and the heads D of these nails overlap the edges of the notches and hold the lid or cover down on the box. The cover is reduced around the edges of the notches sufficiently far to receive the heads D,which will come about flush with the cover. The notched end of the cover is re-enforced by the metal strip E, which is de- 5 reduced portion of the cover and receive the strain and prevent the nail-heads D from pulling or tearing through the cover.
The shank G is fastened at its upper end to the cover or to a batten, F, secured thereto, and its lower end is beveled and provided with the notch c,which is adapted to receive the springactuated catch G on the box or crate. This catch is mortised in a batten, H, which is sccured to the end of the box or crate, and is adapted to move in a horizontal plane, and is pivoted at one end and has its other end fiattened to form the thumb-piece g. The inner end of the catch is square, and the spring I is adapted to bear thereon and hold the catch open, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The horizontal mortise J in' the batten is widened at one end, j, to receive the thumb-pieceg, which extends on each side of the mortise J and limits the inward movement of the catch. The vertical opening K receives the shank 0.
To adjust the cover, slide the notched end until the nails enterthe notches and the heads D overlap the edges thereof. This will bring the end of the shank opposite the opening K. Now press down-on the free end of the cover or lid and the shank will be forced down in the opening and will be engaged by the catch, which will ride over the beveled end of the shank and enter the notch therein. To unlock the cover, insert the end of the finger or an instrument in the enlarged endj of the mortise J and pry the catch out. Now lift the end of the cover having the shank and slide the notched end out of engagement with the heads D. The cover or lid is now free and can be removed at will.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. Thecombination,'with the box or crate and the coverhaving notchesin its end, of the nails having heads, which heads are adapted to overlap the edges of the notches, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the boX or crate having nails extending therefrom, ofthe cover having notches and having the portion surrounding the notches reduced, and the metal strip secured to the end of the cover and de pressed to fit the reduced portion of the cover around the notches to reenforce the same, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the box or crate, the nails at one end of the box, the batten at the other end thereof, having a vertical opening and a horizontal mortise, the mortise being widened at one end, the catch pivoted at one end and having its other end flattened, and the spring, of the cover or lid having notches at one end to receive the nails, the batten at the other end of the cover, and the shank having a beveled and notched end de pending from the said batten, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony WhereofI afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
XVM. M. CASTLIO.
