COVER-FASTENER FOR'EGG-CASES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,916, dated December 8, 1885.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States,residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cover-Fasteners for Egg-Gases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to an improvement in cover-fasteners for egg-cases; and it consists in the peculiar.ecnstruction and arrangement of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of an egg-ease provided with a coverfastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed vertical sectional view of the fast-- ener and a portion of the case and cover. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the spring in another position.

A represents an egg case or carrier, provided on its ends with transverse horizontal cleats 13, secured near its upper edge. A cover or lid, 0, fits on the upper side of the case, and is provided with depending end cleats or flanges, D, which rest on the cleats B when the cover is placed on the box or case.

The case and the cover are preferably made of wood, but may be made of any other suit- 7 able material.

In the center of each of the cleatsB is made a vertical recess, 1), the inner side of which is inclined inwardly and upwardly, as shown. The cleats or flanges D are provided also with vertical recesses (Z, that register with recesses 12 when the cover is placed on the case.

E represents flat metallic spring-plates having their upper ends curved outwardly. These spring-plates are secured at their lower ends in the recesses Z) by screws F, are provided at their centers with openings e and near their upper ends with openings 0, and bear inwardly which studs the openings e of the springs engage, thus securing the cover to the case.

Through the openings 6 of the springs pass headed screws F, that enter the cleats B, and may be either driven into the said cleats far enough to have their heads bear against the outer sides of the springs, or unscrewed sufficiently to leave a slight space between the springs and the heads of the screws, so that the springs may be moved outwardly at their upper ends to disengage the studs and release the cover. hen the screws F are driven home, the upper ends of the springs are not given suflicient play to enable them to disengage the studs and release the cover, thus securing the cover against being removed until after the screws F have been unscrewed to the position shown in Fig. 3.

A fastening thus constructed is cheap and simple, secures the cover firmly to the case, and adapts it to be readily removed therefrom. I

Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the case having the recesses b, and the springplates secured in said recesses, with the cover having the recesses cl, and with which the free ends of the springplates engage when the cover is piaced on the case, and the locking-screws F, having the heads adapted to bear on the spring-plates, to prevent play of the latter or to release them, substantially as described.
