PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS, w. woon, or ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
STOVE- BACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,346, dated August 11, 1885.
Application filed November 1, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs W.-WOOD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Backs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which formxa part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable fire-backs for stoves, the object of my invention being to provide a fire-back which is made up of sections and a wedge-shaped center piece, whereby the parts can be adjusted so as to fit stoves having difierent sizes of fire-pots; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figurelrepresents afront view of my invention. Fig. 2is an end view. Fig. 3 is a view from the opposite end, the center piece being removed. Fig. 4. is an end view of the wedge-shaped center piece, and Fig. 5 is a view illustrating by full and dotted lines the manner of adjusting the side sections of the back by means of the central wedgesections.
A A represent the upper sections of the fire-back, which are provided on their upper rear edge with projections a a. On the upper side opposite these projections is a projection, b, the inner edges of which are beveled inwardly, and the outer edge of the same is slightly cut away, as shown at b, so as to fit beneath the lugs usually formed in the firepot of the stove, or to afford a rest for thefirebricks, which may extend at right angles therefrom. The front face of this section is provided with acute corrugations B, which engage with similar -formed corrugations,
which are reversed upon the lower sections,O. One edge of this lower section, as shown at c, is cut away at an angle with its top and bottom, which angular edge is beveled inwardly. The opposite straight edge, 0, is recessed for the same purpose as the recess 1) in the upper section, A. The base of the section 0 is on a line when the parts are placed together with the back of the section A, and this portion projects beyond its beveled edge. To adjust the sections A O, a pair of each sections being employed, it is only necessary to raise or lower the upper sections to fit the depth of the fire-pot.
The wedge shaped section D, which has beveled edges, as shown in Fig. 4., is employed to adjust the sections A A O O longitudinally, and said wedge is inserted in the recess and engages with the beveled end of the projecting portion b c of the sectionsA G. This center section is provided with transverse corrugations, which are deeply cut, so that the portion of said wedge which projects above or below the sections A C may be readily removed by breaking said wedge-shaped section at the desired point.
I claim- 1. In a fire-back for stoves, the sections A A and O 0, provided at their front inner portions with beveled edges, in combination with a wedgeshaped section, D, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a fire-back for stoves, the sections A A, having a front projecting flange beveled at its inner edge, and longitudinal corrugations B, the lower sections, 0, provided on their inner sides with corrugations and angular beveled edges, in combination with a wedgeshaped central section having beveled edges and transverse corrugations, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS W. WOOD.
