Description

(No ModeL) M- E. GAMPANY- HAME MSTBNERl Patented Augll 'IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIP ITJVESSES.
NITED STATES PATENT Ormea. 'I
MILTON EUGENE OAMPANY, OF MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR. OF ONE HALF TO FREDERICK WILLIAM THOMPSON, OF SAME PLACE.
HAME-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,853, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed May 26, 1885.
To all Iwhom it may concern:
Be it known that l, MILTON E. OAMPANY, a citizen ofthe United States, and resident of Muskegon, in the county of 'Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Haine-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descr iption of the invention, which will enable oth ers skilled in the art 1o to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the lower portions of two haines provided with my improved haine-fastener. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the catch, its spring, and its fastenin gs.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of llame-fasteners in which a notched strip is hinged to the lower end of one hame and en- 2 5 tels a box or casing hinged to the lower end of the other haine, said box or casing being provided with a catch for engaging the notches upon the strip 5 and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the 3o same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A indicate the lower ends ofthe haines, which are provided with the usual eyes, B B. The hooked or curved ends C C of the two parts D and E of the fastener are hinged into these eyes, and one part, D, of the fastener consists of a strip having a series of ratchet-teeth, F, upon its outer side, facing with their inclined 4o sides toward the outer end of the strip. The other part, E, of the fastener is formed at its outer end with a rectangular box, G, open at both ends, the sides of which box are formed by upwardly-bent tlanges7 H H, upon the side edges of the strip, while the inner portion of the top of the box is covered by a top piece, I, which connects the edges of the ilanges. The edges of the flanges, where the top ofthe box is open, are formed with bearings, J J, o which are covered by lugs or tongues, K, which may be bent from tne bearings or over (No model.)
them, and two laterally-projecting trunnions,
L L, of a flat-catch or pawl-lever, M, are journaled in these bearings and retained by means of the tongues or lugs being bent over them, the said lugs being shown raised from thc bearings in dotted lines in Fig. 2. rlhe outer end of this catch-lever is formed into a serrated thuinb-piece, N, and the under side of the inner end of the lever is beveled so las to 6o slip over the ratchet-teeth of the toothed strip when the latter is inserted into the box from its open outer end, while the inner face of the lever is cut off straight, so as to engage the shoulders of the ratchet-teeth and bear against them, preventing the strip from being withdrawn. The upper side of the inner portion of the catch-lever is formed with an inwardlybent wide lip, O, and the outer edge of the top piece of the box is formed withan out- 7o wardly-projecting lip, P', against the Linder side of which the inner end of ,the catch-lever may bear, when raised. The side edges of the top piece of the box are formed with iuwardly-bent lips, Q Q, under which the inner 7 5 ends of a bailshaped spring, It, may be clamped, the transverse end piece of the spring resting under the inwardlybent lip upon the catch-lever.
llhe entire box upon the part E is made of 8o malleable metal, so that the tongues forming the tops of the bearings and the lips, which clamp the ends of the spring, may be hainmered down over the parts which they confine, and it'will be seen that by having the spring- 8 5 clamping lips malleable, they may be hammered down so as to clamp the ends of the spring firmly, whereupon the trunnions of the catchflever may be placed into their bear-in gs, and the tongues of the said bearings be bent 9o over the trunnions, preventing them from slipping out of the bearings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. 1n a haine-fastener, the combination, with a toothed strip hinged to one haine and having inwardly-facing teeth, of a strip hinged to the other haine, and having a box upon the face of its outer portion, having its outer por- 10o tion open at the top and formed with bearings in the edges of the sides ot' the box, having a bail-shaped spring secured at its inner ends upon the top oil the box, and having an outwardly-projecting lip at the outer edge of the top of the box, and a eaten-lever pivoted with its late "ally-projecting trunnions in the bearings upon the sides ofthe box, having its outer end formed as a thumb-piece, and hav ing an inwardlybent lip upon the upper side of its inner portion engaging the transverse end piece of the spring, the said eatohlever engaging the ratelletteeth of the other strip with its inner end, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. I
2. In a haine-fastener, the combination of the part E, having the box formed with sides H H, provided with bearings J J, havingy tongues K and top piece, I, covering the in- ,l ner portion of the open top ofthe box, and l havingoutwardlyprojecting lip l) and springl clamping lips Q Q, the bail-shaped spring R, having its ends clamped by the lips Q, and the catch-lever pivoted with its laterally-pro Ijeeting trunnions in the bearings upon the side pieces of the box, having its outer end formed into a thumb-piece serrated upon its upper side, havingits innerend eutoifstraight, and having an inwardly-bent tlat lip, O, upon the upper side of its inner portion, the said box being' formed of malleable metal, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
