Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD TERRELL, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPRCVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,262, dated October 27, 1874; application tiled June 10,1874.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, RICHARD TERRELL, a resident 'of the city of New Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bale-Ties; and"`I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification.
My improvement relates to the construction of metal bale-bands, whereby the ends of the same may be'securely fastened together; and it consists in punching or stamping the said ends, as will hereinafter be described, and as will be more clearly understood byreferenee to the drawing, whereon the same is shown, 1n-
Figure 1, by a view of the two opposite ends of a metallic band before lookin g them together. Fig. 2 shows the same as when locked together in the actual practice of the invention, and Fig. 3 shows a slight modification of the above.
Similar .lettersnof reference indicate corresponding parts of the device.
In the practice of the invention it may be deemed necessary to fold the extreme ends of the bands, thereby increasing the thickness, and, consequently, the strength of the same.
Upon one end of the band I construct a series of notches, a a a", te., and upon the opposite end of the said band a succession of projecting hooks, b b b, Ste., all at equal distances apart, in order that the hooks on the one end may engage the edges of the notches place the bands on the bale with the hooks b outward the extreme ends of the notched portion of the same can be cut to a point and bent under. so as to hook into a depression formed in the other end of the band by pressing the same, as at d, in 'an opposite direction to that of the hooks.-
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The notches a c', Ste., hooks b b', &c., and projecting guards or shields c o', &c., formed at the edges and center of the opposite sections of a metallic band, the whole being constructed, combined, and arranged to provide a means of fastening and protecting the ends of said band, substantially as described.
VRICHARD TERRELL.
