PLATE FOR SECURING TRAGES TO BACK BANDS.
No. 322,059. Patented July 14, 1885.

BENJAMIN F. JONES, OF BEA UREGARD, MISSISSIPPI.
PLATE FOR SECURING TRACES TO BACK-BANDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,059, dated July 14, 1885.
Application filed Dccembcr 12, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. J oNEs, of Beauregard, in the county of Copiah and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Plate to be Secured to the Ends of Back-Bands of Harness and Plow-Gear, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my device, and Fig. 2 an edge View of the same.
My invention consists of a plate, A, with holes D D D D for securing the same by riveting or otherwise to the end of back-band, with hooks B B, made by punching the metal of the plate A far enough from the body of the plate to permit the link of a chain to pass between the hook B and the opening 0 of the plate A, which opening 0 is made when the hook B is punched from the plate A. These plates may be made with one or more hooks, and of any suitable metal, or they may be cast. I am aware that a device for the same purpose is now in use, consisting of a buckle with one hook similar to mine; but it is objectionable because of it being necessary to pass the band more than once through the buckle, making a knot, as it were, which is liable to cause a lump to appear on the animal, and it is also, because of its insecure fastening, liable to be lost or liable to slip from its position. In my device the trace can be raised or lowered without changing the position of the plate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The plate A, provided with openings 0 and I
