This invention relates to smoking implements such as pipes, cigar and cigarette holders, and particularly to means by which the temperature of the smoke passing through the smoke passage can be regulated by the admission of air into the passage.
It is an object of the invention to provide air-admission means by which a regulatable amount of air is admitted into the smoke passage, thereby providing for a cool smoke.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device by which the control of the admitted air is attained by the movement of a rotative ring, allowing the smoker to readily regulate the extent of the air admitted into the smoke passage.
More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a bit or mouthpiece having a reduced forward extension inserted into the end of the stern of a pipe or the like, said extension having a radial air-admitting opening; and a relatively narrow ring fitted around the extension and having an opening for registry with that in the bit extension to thereby allow for the admission of air through such registered openings and into the smoke passage in the bit. The invention also contemplates the provision of a plurality of openings of different diameters in the bit extension or in the ring so that by rotative movement of the ring, the opening or openings extending through the ring can be registered with the opening in the bit to thereby control the amount of air admitted to the air passage. The invention also contemplates the provision of means by which the rotative ring is mounted on an extension of the bit and is held against longitudinal displacement.
With these and other objects to be hereinafter set forth in view, I have devised the arrangement of parts to be described and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

The smoking implement herein shown is in the form of a conventionally-shaped pipe, but it will be understood that the improvements may also be applied to. a cigar or cigarette holder. The improved pipe includes a bowl 1 having a conventional hollow stem 2 extending from it and provided with the usual smoke passage 2a. (FIG. 9). The bit or mouthpiece of the pipe is shown at 3 and at its forward end it is formed with a reduced-diameter extension 4 that is fitted into the hollow interior or smoke passage 2a of the stem 2.
The bit or mouthpiece 3 has a conventional smoke passage 21 extending through it and which also continues through the extension 4, as seen in FIGS. 5 and 9. The bit is formed with an annular shoulder 8 which defines the rear end of the extension 4 and when the extension 4 is inserted in the passage of 2a of the stem 2, a channel is defined between the end of the stem and the shoulder in which rotatable adjustment ring 7 (FIG. 1) or 27 (FIGS. 9 and 10) is fitted. 9
Referring to the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 8, the adjustment or control ring 7 is preferably, but not necessarily, composed of metal and it has a knurled exterior surface to facilitate its manual rotative adjustment. For retaining the ring 7 on the bit extension 4, a split retaining ring 6 is provided, the same overlying a face of the adjustment ring 7 and fitting in a depression 20. in said face, the retaining ring being received in an annular groove 5 provided in the outer surface of the extension 4. The retaining ring 6 acts to retain the adjustment or control ring 7 in position on the extension 4 when the mouthpiece or hit is removed from the stern for cleaning or otherwise.
Provided in the extension 4 and in the portion thereof which forms the channel in which the adjustment or control ring 7 is rotative, is a plurality of radial apertures, two of which are shown and indicated respectively at 9 and 10. The aperture shown at 9 is of larger diameter than that shown at 10, thus providing for a greater of air admission to the interior of the smoke passage through aperture 9 than is obtained through the aperture 10, for the purpose of cooling the smoke.
Extending through the adjustment or control ring 7 is a radial aperture 11, which is adapted, by rotative adjustment of the ring 7, to be aligned or registered with either one of the apertures 9 or 10. The aperture 11 in the ring 7 is of a diameter similar to the diameter of the aperture 9 extending through the extension 4 of the bit. I In order to aid in registering one or the other of the apertures 9 and 10 with that shown at 11 in the ring 7, a stop means is provided. The same consists of a pin 13 projecting forwardly from the shoulder 8 of the bit or mouthpiece and entering into an arcuate groove 14 provided in one of the faces of the ring 7 and which face is that which is opposite to the retaining ring abutting face seen in FIG. 2. When the ring 7 is manually adjusted, the pin 13, being brought against one end of the slot 14, will cause registration of the aperture 11 of the ring 7 with the smaller-diameter aperture 10 in the bit, as shown in FIG. 4. When the pin 13 abuts against the opposite end of the slot 14, as shown in FIG. 7, the aperture 11 will be then registered with the smaller-diameter aperture 10 in the bit.
The apertures 9 and 10 are so spaced apart that when the ring 7 is turned slightly to thereby position the aperture 11 between the apertures 9 and 10, any inflow of air into the smoke passage will be prevented.
In order to maintain the adjustment or control ring in either of the positions shown respectively in FIGS. 4 and 7, a detent arrangement is provided. The same includes a detent plunger 17 biased by the compression spring 23 and caused to engage with either of the recesses 15 and 16 which are formed in the same face of the adjustment ring 7 as that in which the arcuate groove 14 is provided and as seen in FIG. 8. The recesses 15 and 16 are so spaced apart that when the detent 17 engages with one or the other of them, the aperture 11 will then be registered with one or the other of the apertures 9 and 10 and will maintain this registered arrangement of the apertures until the adjustment ring 7 is manually turned. This arrangement is such that the detent device provides for click stops for the aperture 11 at both of its positions of registry with the two apertures in the bit extension.
A washer 12, composed of nylon or other suitable material may be positioned on the extension 4 between the end of the ring 7 and the end of the stem for providing a good sealing contact.
While I have herein indicated that two air openings 9 and 10 can be provided in the bit extension 4, only one can be used, or more than two can be provided if desired. Also while I have shown two click stops for the ring 7, an additional one can be added to indicate a neutral or closed position of the ring.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 9 to 17, another embodiment of the invention is shown. Therein the shoulder 8 of the bit is provided with a forwardly-extending lug or pin 33 which may be integrally formed on the bit or consist of an inserted part, and one of the faces of the adjustment ring 27 is formed with an arcuate groove 34 in which the pin or lug 33 projects and which limits the rotative movement of the ring 27 around the bit extension 4. In this embodiment of the invention, the ring 27 is provided with three radial apertures, indicated respectively at 39, 40 and 41 and adapted for selective registry with the single aperture 30 extending radially through the bit extension 4. The apertures 39, 40 and 41 are of different diameters so that the extent of air passage through them can be regulated according to the size of the aperture that is aligned with that shown at 30 in the bit extension.
The ring 27 is held in its operative and rotative position on the bit extension 4 and over the aperture 30 therein by means of a retaining washer 36 of the type clearly shown in FIG. 15. It will be therein noted that the washer is provided with a plurality of radial and inwardlydirected teeth 50 which are slightly inclined as seen in FIG. 16. When this retaining washer is first placed on the bit extension, as shown for example, in FIG. 17 it will freely slide along the same. When the ring 27 is brought into contact with the shoulder 8, with the lug or pin 33 entering the groove 34, the washer 36 is then pushed into the depression 20 in the face of the ring 27 and the teeth 50 are straightened or aligned by the application of a suitable tool, said teeth 50 thereupon biting into the surface of the extension 4, as substantially shown in dotted lines in FIG. 16, thus causing the washer 36 to grippingly engage the extension 4 and confine the ring 27 between it and the shoulder 8. This arrangement is such that the ring 27 is held against longitudinal shift on the extension 4, while being rotatable thereon with sufficient friction to enable it to retain any position to which it is moved namely, with one or the other of the three apertures 39, 40 and 41 aligned with the aperture 30 in the bit extension 4.
To facilitate the alignment of any one of the apertures 39, 40 and 41 with the aperture 30, an indicating designation such as the dot 52 (FIG. 10) is employed on the bit to disclose the position of the aperture 30, and hence any one of the apertures 39, 40 and 41 longitudinally aligned with the indicating designation 52 will thus be registered with the aperture 30. In the operation of this device it is merely necessary to manually rotate the ring 27 to align the selected aperture in the ring with the indicator 52 and the selected aperture will then be registered with the bit aperture 30.
Having thus described embodiments of the invention, it is obvious that the same is not to be restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims.
What I claim is:
1. A pipe having a bit provided with a shoulder and a forward cylindrical extension therefrom, a pin extending forwardly from the shoulder, the extension having a radial air passage extending through it from the interior of the bit, a ring encircling the extension and rotatively movable thereon, said ring having an arcuate groove in one of its end faces into which the pin extends and which limits the extent of rotative movement of the ring relative- 1y to the bit, the ring being provided with a plurality of radial passages any one of which is adapted to be aligned with the air passage in the bit extension by the rotative movement of the ring, the ring having a recess in one of its end faces, and a washer. fitted on the extension and located in the recess and grippingly engaging the extension and restraining the ring against movement axially of the bit. 7
2. A pipe as provided for in claim 1, wherein the recess in the end face of the ring is located in the face of the ring opposite to that end face in which the arcuate groove is formed, said groove extending only partly through the ring, and the washer having a plurality of teeth biting into the extension and holding said washer immovably in place thereon.
3. A pipe having a bit formed with a smoke passage, said bit having an integral shoulder and a cylindrical extension projecting therefrom, a projection directed forwardly from the shoulder, a ring fitted around and rotatively movable on the extension, said ring having an arcuate groove in one of its ends into which the projection is located, the groove limiting the rotative movement of the ring, the ring having a plurality of air passages extending radially through it, the extension having a radial air passage extending through it and communicating at one end with the smoke passage, the rotative movement of the ring serving to align one or the other of its air passages with that in the bit extension, and a washer fitted on the extension and gripping the periphery of the same and disposed against one end face of the ring and serving to confine the ring between it and the shoulder.

Claims (1)
1. A PIPE HAVING A BIT PROVIDED WITH A SHOULDER AND A FORWARD CYLINDRICAL EXTENSION THEREFROM, A PIN EXTENDING FORWARDLY FROM THE SHOULDER, THE EXTENSION HAVING A RADIAL AIR PASSAGE EXTENDING THROUGH IT FROM THE INTERIOR OF THE BIT, A RING ENCIRCLING THE EXTENSION AND ROTATIVELY MOVABLE THEREON, SAID RING HAVING AN ARCUATE GROOVE IN ONE OF ITS END FACES INTO WHICH THE PIN EXTENDS AND WHICH LIMITS THE EXTENT OF ROTATIVE MOVEMENT OF THE RING RELATIVELY TO THE BIT, THE RING BEING PROVIDED WITH A PLURALITY OF RADIAL PASSAGES ANY ONE OF WHICH IS ADAPTED TO BE ALIGNED WITH THE AIR PASSAGE IN THE BIT EXTENSION BY THE ROTATIVE MOVEMENT OF THE RING, THE RING HAVING A RECESS IN ONE OF ITS END FACES, AND A WASHER FITTED ON THE EXTENSION AND LOCATED IN THE RECESS AND GRIPPINGLY ENGAGING THE EXTENSION AND RESTRAINING THE RING AGAINST MOVEMENT AXIALLY OF THE BIT.
