screws. (01. 131 1'2 This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a sanitary smokers stem for pipes, cigars and the like. i I
The invention has for an object the construc- 5 tion of'a stem which is characterized by a hollow divided into twocompartments with a plug havingperipheral grooves to allow'passage of smoke from one to the other, and the provision of tubes connecting one of the compartments with the 1 mouthpiece of the stem and the other with the head of the stem. I j
The invention has for a still further object the novel arrangement whereby the mouthpiece is detachably held in place; i
Furthermore, this invention proposes the provision of means allowing the withdrawal of the plug which divides thehollow chamber into the compartments mentioned.
Furthermore, it is another object of this inven- 20 tion to provide means; for varying the passage formed by the peripheral grooves uponfthe plug so that the pipe may beset at the most advantageous condition for smoking.
As another object it is proposed to construct an article of the class described which is of simple 7 p piece 14 thesmoke fro rn the cigar or the bowl durable construction, dependable in use 'and'efiicient in operation and which can be manufac tuned and sold at a reasonable cost. For further comprehension of the invention, 30 and of the objects and advantages thereof, refer.-
ence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended elaims in which the various novel features of v the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure: Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a pipe constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on of the stem into the two compartments has 95 been shown whichis'arranged so as to be formed 40 the line 22 of Fig. 1. 1
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a cigar holder constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of a modified form of plug for use in the sanitary stem. I
Fig. 5 is an elevational view looking in the direction of the line 55 of Fig. 4.
The smokers sanitary stem for pipes, cigars and the like is indicated by reference numeral and is shown formed with a head end 11 which connects with the bowl 12 of a pipe as shown in Fig. 1 or with a portion 12" adapted to receive the end of the cigar or the like. The main portion of the stem 10 is formed with a hollow 13 communicating with the tail end. A removable mouthpiece 14 closes the hollow 13. A plug 15 is located 18 with the bushing. The outer end *of the tube AS set screw 24 mour'frte' within theholl ow 13 and divides it into two compartments indicated by reference numerals 116 1 and 17 respectively.
A smoke tube 18 extends through the head end '11 of the stem and through the plug 15, so that 60 smoke from the bowl or cigar may be discharged l5 and connects with the mouthpiece 14,
' The tube 18 isthreaded at one end 20' and threadedly engages within a bushingl 2l formed with external threads engaging within the head end 11; The tube l8 is axially arranged with the plug 15 so that the plug may beturned to 1 engage or disengage the tube from the bushing. The outer end of the plug 15; is formed with openings 22 for receiving a turning tool which may be engaged-in from the open end of the stem to accomplish'proper connection of the tube 19 isformed with threads 23 which threadedlyengage into the 'inner end of the mouthpiece l4. upon'. the mouthpiece '14'locks the mouthpiece against the portion 23.
,When the smoker draws through the mouth- 12 passes through the tubel8 intothe chamber 1'7-,j;then through the, peripheral grooves of the plug l5 'to the compartment 16 and thence I through thefitub'e 19*anfidthe mouthpiece 14.
removing theplug; 15 which carries with it the tubes 18 andl9.
In the modified form of the device illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 a plug for dividingthe chamber with peripheral passageswhich are adjustable to control the passage of the smoke. More par ticularly, the plug is formed from an outer end I disc 25 which is-fixed upon the tubes 18 and 160 19. The outer end disc 25 is formed with a recess 26 adapted to be engaged by a flange 27 ence numeral 15'. The inner disc which concludes the plug 15 is indicated by reference numeral 29 and resilient means in the form ofsy. springs 30 act between the' ring 29 and the disc to frictionally hold all of the discs 28 tightly against each other. The construction allows the rings 28 to be slightly turned so that the grooves are out of line from each other any desirable amount which control the passage of thesmoke between the compartments.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, vit is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A stem for pipes, cigar holders and the like, said stem having a head end and a hollow forming a chamber, in combination with a removable mouthpiece closing said chamber, a plug dividing said chamber into two compartments and formed 1 t with peripheral grooves allowing communication between the compartments, a smoke tube extended through the head end and throug'nsaid plug into one of said compartments, a second smoke tube extendedfrom the mouthpiece through the plug into the other compartment, and means for varying the peripheral passage of the grooves on said plug.
2. A stem for pipes, cigar holders and the like,
said stem having a head end and a hollow form- ,ing a chamber, in combination with a removable for adjustably holding said rings in relation to each other.
3. A stem for pipes, cigar holders and the like, said stem having a head end and ahollow form-- ing a chamber, in combination with a removable mouthpiece closing said chamber, a plug dividing saidchamber into two compartments and formed with peripheral grooves allowing communica-' tion between the compartments, a smoke tube extended through the head end and through said plug into one of said compartments, a second smoke tube extended from the mouthpiece through the plug into the other compartment, and means for varying the peripheral passage of the grooves on said plug, comprising a plurality of adjacent rings forming the plug, and means for adjustably holding said rings inrelation to each other, comprising recesses formed in the rings and engaged by flanges formed on adjacent rings.
4. A stemfor' pipes, cigar holders and the like, said stem having a head end and a hollow forming a chamber, in combination with a removable mouthpiece closing said chamber, a plug dividing said chamber into two compartments and formed with peripheral grooves allowing communication between the compartments, a smoke tube extended through the headend and through, said plug into one of said compartments, a second smoke tube extended from the mouthpiece through the plug into the other, compartment, and means for varying the peripheral passage oi -100 the grooves on said plug,;comprising a plurality of adjacent rings forming the plug, means for relatively adjusting the said rings, and means for holding the rings in the adjusted positions.
5. A stem for pipes, cigar holders and the like,; l05 said stem having a head end and a hollow form ing a chamber, in combination with a removable mouthpiece closing said. chamber, a plug dividing said chamber into two compartments and formed with peripheral grooves allowinglcom- 1-10 munication between the compartments, a smoke tube extended through the head end and through said plug into one of said compartments, a second smoke tube extended from the mouthpiece throughthe plug into the other compartment, -1-15 and means for varying the peripheral passage of the grooves on said plug, comprising a plurality of adjacent rings forming the plug, means for relatively adjusting the said rings, and means for holding the rings in the adjusted positions, com- 120 prising resilient means. acting between the end rings to frictionally hold all of the rings tightly against each other.
