SAMUEL HALE, OF BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
CRIB, SETTEE.
AND LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,651, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed June 2, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LSAMUEL HALE,a citizen of St. John, New Brunswick,Dominion of Canada, residing at Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New J crsey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cribs, Settees, and Lounges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of my invention, showing the side and end sections raised and connected together to form a crib; Fig 2, a similar View with the side sections let down and the end sections supported at an acute angle to form a lounge; Fig. 3, an under plan view showing the end and side sections and the legs folded against the body-frame; Fig. 4, a detail view in perspective showing the manner of connecting the side sections to the bodyframe. 5 is a similar view of the spring-latching device for holding the side and end sections together; Fig. 6, a detail View of the springlocking device for holding the legs extended, and Fig. 7 a detail view in section of the spring portion of the latching device.
The object of the present invention is to provide an article of household furniture which can be always made useful by converting it from a childs crib into a right or left settee or a right or left lounge, as found desirable; and the invention consists in the de tails of construction substantially as shown in the drawing, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body-frame provided with side sections, B, end sections, 0, and legs D, which are connected to the frame as in the ordinary folding crib, so that the side and end sections and the legs can be folded against the same when not required for use, in order to economize space or for transportion.
The upper bars,a, of the side section,B, are provided at their ends with pins 11 and slotted hooks E, pivoted to the outer sides of the bars.
The pins b are adapted to enter holes a in Fig.-
(No model.)
the upper end of braces e of the end section,O, and the slotted ends of the hooks E enter the socket-plates d, and are held therein by a spring-catch, F, engaging with the slot in the hook. This slotted hook and catch, when taken together, Iterm a spring-latching device, which holds in a secure manner the end and side sections when used as a crib, and preventing them from becoming disconnected by the child, thus avoiding accidents.
Unlike the ordinary hinged sides of a fold ing crib, thesections B are connected to the inner sides of the longitudinal braces G at the sides of the body-frame A by hinges H. One leaf or arm of this hinge is pivoted at r to the end of the section B, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4. This manner of connecting the side sections to the body-frame enables the sec tions to be brought over the mattress or cushion on the frame A, or snugly folded down on the bottom thereof; or, when the article of furniture is converted into a lounge or settee, the side sections, either one or both, are let down, as shown in Fig. 2.
The upper portion of the hinges H, when the sections B are in an upright position for use in a crib, rest on the longitudinal bars G, thus forming a brace to take any undue strain off the sections at that point.
The braces e of the end sections '0, at or near their lower ends, are pivoted to the bars G of the frame A by screw-bolts f passing through them, with which engage thumb-nuts g, retained upon the end of the bolts by pivoted buttons h. The legs D are also pivoted to the inner sides of the longitudinal bars G, and are held extended by spring-latches consisting of a plate, i, to which is pivoted the catch I, retained against the legs bya spring, 70, one end being fast to the plate and the opposite end bearing on the squaresided end of the catch, as shown in Fig. 6,
Heretofore the end sections of the ordinary folding crib were either held in an upright position or folded against the body-frame when not in use, there being no provision made for holding the sections at such angle as to adapt the crib for use as a lounge.
This being one of the essential features of my invention,I shall proceed to describe what I consider the most simple and practical means for supporting and retaining the end sections at such angle as to form both a foot and head rest when the article of furniture is used as a lounge. To this end I extend the longitudinal bars G some distance beyond the ends of the body-frame A, thus providing a stop and support, Z, for the extremities of the transverse bars m forming a part of each end section, 0. Although this means may be considered very simple, nevertheless the object is attained--viz., that of holding firmly the end sections at the required angle.
In Fig. 1 I have shown the invention adapted for use as a childs crib, and when it is desired for use as either a right or left settee one or other of the side sections B is let down by first pressing on the thumb-piece n, which will press inward the catch F and release it from the slotted end of the hook E. This will allow the side section to be disconnected from the end sections and let down against the side of the body-frame.
Should a lounge be desired having both a foot and a head rest, both the side sections are let down and the end sectionsthrown back until the ends of the bars m thereof rest against the ends of bars G of the body-frame,thus providing a comfortable and easy lounge, as shown in Fig. 2.
If only one of the end sections 0 is required to be used as a head-rest, the other section is folded down against the upper side of the body-frame A.
The article of furniture herein described can be made in any style the manufacturer may choose, and if desired the legs may be provided with rockers detachably or permanently connected thereto, and any means may be provided for retaining the end sections at an acute angle, when used as a lounge, the means shown, however, being what I consider the most practical and simple.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined crib, settee, and lounge consisting of a body-frame, folding side sections and folding end sections, and the longitudinal bars extending some distance beyond the ends of the body-frame to provide a stop and support for the end sections to retain them at an acute angle when in'use as a lounge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a combined crib, settee, and lounge, a body-frame having its side bars extending beyond the ends thereof and provided with folding legs held extended by spring-latches consisting of a pivoted catch held against the legs by a spring bearing on the pivoted end of the catch, in combination with the folding side sections, the hinges pivoted thereto and connected to the body-frame, and means for holding the end sections in an upright position, consisting of a slotted hook and springcatch to engage therewith, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL HALE.
