FREDERICK SCHRAY, OF BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUCHANAN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING BED.
@SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,298,6lated June 16, 1885.
(No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be .it known that l, Fnnnnnion ScnRAY, of Buchanan, in the county of Berricn and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements i n Folding Beds, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specitication.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding beds; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the joint in the side rails, and in thepeculiar construction, arrangement, and various combinations of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l. is an end elevation with the bed closed, showing the position of parts in dotted outline. Fig. 2 is a perspective ot' the side rails opened out and their various attachments. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional elevation ot'one ot' the joints ofthe side rail open. Fig. 1 is a similar view closed. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of one ofthe saddles, and Fig. o is a vertical section of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specilication, A represents a suitable case divided into two parts, forming the head'scction a and foot-section b. This case may be made in any desired forni-for instance, such as representing a cabinet, as sxown.
B represents the side rails, the outer ends of which are connected together by the transverse rails C, to which may be secured a wovenwire mattress, D', and which latter may be provided with any ol'theknown mechanical devices for stretching and tightening the same. The inner ends ot'thcse side rails, B B, are provided with intermeshing cogs, the two upper cogs in cach pair of the side rails serving as a loel; when the bed is extended, so as to limit the downward radial movement of the rails. These engaging ends of the side rails,
B B, are inclosed beneath a saddle, D, upon each side, and to which they are pivotally s e-v cured, as at c, Figs. 3 and et.
In order that the pivot-bolt used at this point shall not appear upon the -outer face of the saddle and make a disligurement in the appearance of the device, I recess the inner face of the outer wing ofthe saddle to receive the head of the pivot-bolt c, which is retained in its position by a plate, E, secured within the recess.
F is a central cross-bar, the ends of which are pivotally secured to the side rails by the links or arms G, and upon this central cross-bar I secure a series of coil-springs, II, which, when the bed is open, form a support to the central portion of the mattress. The outer ends of the side rails are pivotally secured in the head and foot sections of the frame A in any convenient and substantial manner. By this construction I produce a bed that, when in its closed position, will serve as an ornamental piece of furniture in the room without disclosing what it really is, as all the parts are hidden within the case, while when the bed is Open a sagging of the side rails is prevented by the peculiar construction of the double knuckle-joint, two of the knuckles or cogs of which form, together with their pivots, a lock, which prevents a sagging of the rails at that point, the springs and the cross-rail F preventing a sagging of the mattress in the center. It will be observed that in the closing ot' the device this bar F, by means ot' its peculiar connection with the side rails, drops away from the matress, allowing it to have a free movement in the folding ofthe bed.
NVhat I claim as my invention isl. The combination, in a folding bed, ofthe two-part case A, having the side rails, B B, pivot-ally secured thereto, with the saddles D, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a folding bed, ofthe two-part case A, saddles D, and side rails B,
