SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 263,535, dated August 29, 1882. Application filed March 10, 1882. (N0 model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILIP M. KRIOKL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Folding Lounges, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of folding lounges in which when the lounge is folded both parts of the mattress arecompletely incased within the main frame, the lower or rear portion being brought up flush with the upper or front portion of said mattress when the bed is opened by the movement of said upper portion in opening.

The object of my invention is to provide for bringing the lower portion of the mattress vertically to its position When theloungeis opened, whereby the lower or rear portion of the mattress is permitted to tit snugly in the main frame, thus to a greater extent economizing room and securing a larger bed-surface than heretofore in lounges of this class.

To this end my invention consists in an arran gement of parts, as will be fully understood from the following description, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lounge opened, With a portion of the main frame broken away to better show the raising device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, showing in dotted lines .the position of the device when the lounge is closed. Fig.

3 is a detailed view, referred to hereinafter.

In the said drawings, in which like parts are represented by similar letters of reference throughout the several views, A A represent the main frame of the lounge; B B, the front and rear or upper and lower portions of the mattress. These parts B and B are connected together, and the front portion, B, hinged to the top of the front of main frame A A in the ordinary manner.

Hinged at each end of the main frame, on the inside, are two parallel bars, I) D, pivoted at their upper ends to a longitudinal bar, 0, to which the ends of the lower portion, B, of the mattress are loosely attached by loops 0 e, which pass around said bar, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or by means of screws S S, extending through a slot, h, provided therein, or in any other suitable manner.

F is a connecting-link hinged at one end to the longitudinal bar 0 and pivoted. at the mattress.

The operation, which is very simple, is as follows: As the lounge is closed by swinging the front part, B, of the mattress on its hinges in the ordinary manner, the longitudinal bar (I and the parallel bars D D, by reason of the connecting-link F, are folded down into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, while the rear portion, B, of the mattress, being loosely attached to the longitudinal bar 0 in the manner above described, is lowered vertically into and fits snugly within the main frame A A, the longitudinal bars 0 sliding through loops 6 c, or on screws S S, as will be readily understood by reference to the draw- 1ugs.

It will be seen that by this arrangement I economize room to a greater extent and secure a larger bed'surt'ace than heretofore in lounges of this class.

Having thus described myiuvention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a folding lounge, a pair of parallel bars pivoted at one end to the frame of the lounge and at the other to a longitudinal bar loosely attached to the rear or lower portion of the mattress, in combination with a connection from the longitudinalbar to the front portion of the mattress, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The parallel bars D D, pivoted at one end to inside of end of main frame A A and at the other to longitudinal bars G, loosely attached to rear portion, B, of mattress, in combination with link F, connected atone end to bar 0 and at the other to portion B of mattress, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination of bars D D, longitudinal bars 0, liul; F, and loops e c with folding mattress B B and main frame A A, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination of the parallel bars D D, longitudinal bar 0, having slot h, screws S S, connecting-link F, folding mattress B B, and main frame A A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
