TTEST- INVENTOR, ,M/W 1 M.. Af. y am.'
JOHN II. KINTER, OF INDIANA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAT E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,257, dated June 16,1885.
' Application filed October 31, 1584. (No model.)
T 0 all whom. it may concern,.-
Be it known that l, JOHN H. KINTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indiana, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the Afollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a perspective View of the gate, the dotted lines indicating the vertical movement of its panel. Fig. 2 is a perspective view in detail ofthe gateslide. Fig. 3 is a detail view of sill. Fig. I is a detail view of the post A, showing slide H.
This invention relates to farnrgates and to gates generally wherein it is desired to swing a gate in such manner that it can be elevated or placed at any desired height or position.
The object of this invention is practically to suspend a gate or door on strong link or. other hinges substantially without the use of a heavy chain. and adjust-ably, so that it can be conveniently elevated or turned down to allow it to pass over obstructions; also, to allow the herdsman to separate smallstoek; also, to swing a gate or door level, or as desired, on a sagged post, or for other reasons.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A desig nates the gate-post to which the gate is hinged. A' designates the post to which the gate is fastened when sluit. The gate proper may be of any suitable form or construction.
The panel B, as shown in the drawings, is made of the horizontal rails b and front and end parts, b Il, each formed of vertical parallel pieces or strips, the ends ofthe middle rails being confined between these pieces. At the end of this panel and between it and the post A is the part b, made in like manner as b' I.
C C designate one part of the hinges of' the gate, and are practically staplebolts, which are passed through and secured to the post A and provided with one or more washers or blocks, c. To the eyes of these bolts arelinked or hooked the metal rods D D, which pass between the two parts which make up the rear part, L3, ot' the gate, and through the face-plate E and clasps il d', and are provided with nuts c c on theirscrew-threaded ends. These clasps arc pieces of metal with bent ends, and so made that they tit upon the edges of the vertical end part b. lt' desired, a like clasp, di, can be placed on the other end ot' the rods so as to fit in like manner upon the other face of the end part b3. The face-plate E, slotted at e nearly from top to bottom, comes between the clasps l d and the inner edge of b3, and, among other uses, serves as a metallic bearing for said clasps.
It will be observed that the gate is readily co adjustable vertically by looseningthe nuts c e, and it will also be seen that the slotted faceplate and the clasps, together with the nuts, permit the gate-panel to be firmly secured to the eycbolts, which constitute the hinges of 65 the gate proper.
The latch end of the gate is raised or lowered, as desired, by the addition or detraction of the blocks or washers c on the lower hinge on post A. can be reversed by removing the upper clasp and the upper rod, D, and the gate will then be supported on the lower hinge, and can then be turned as desired.
At the bottom ofthe hinged end a block, a, 75'
is fixed near the post A, with a screw-pivot, a. In lowering a heavy gate aboard is placed on the block as high as the pivot to receive the weight of the gate. If the drop should be more sudden than desired, this will protect the 8o hinges.
The latch end is supported and fastened by bolt y' at any required height by means of the slotted piece H, adjustably fixed on the face of post A by bolts and nuts L It" 1.5i. struction will also hold the gate pi vot-ally at any desired position when turned down.
Having described my invention, I claiml. The combination, in a vertically-adjustable horizontally-swiaging gate, of the panels 9:
Ir b, the eyebolt-hinges, the slotted face-plate E, the clasps d tl' di, and the nuts, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the gate and its posts, of' the eyebolt-hinges, their clasps and 95 nuts, the slotted plate E, the screwpivot c', the slotted plate H, and the fastening-bolt, substantially as described.
3. In a gate, the combination of the panels b? b, with the hinge, the slotted faceplate E, r(
the clasps Z and d', and retaining-mits, whereby said gate is vertically adjustable, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof Iat'x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN I-I. KINTER.
