BENJAMIN HEATH, QF DOW CITY, IOWA.
COMBINED GATE HINGE, ROLLER, AND HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,790, dated February 4, 1890.
Application filed October 31, 1889- fierial No. 328,749. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HEATH, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Dow City, in the county of Crawford and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Gate Hinge, Roller, and Hanger; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combined gate hinge, roller, and hanger; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly claimed, whereby I provide a device adapted to support a gate between two posts,
so that the same can be slid upon the roller and turned to open or close the gate.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a section of fence to which my improvement is applied, the gate being shown closed in full lines and open in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the combined gate hinge, roller, and hanger.
A and A refer to the sections of fence between which the gateway is formed, one of said sections having a post a, while the opposite section has two posts b and b, one of said posts being arranged diagonally and in front of the post to which the panels are attached. These posts (2 b are connected to each other by straps or metallic plates 0 c, which are bent adjacent to their centers to provide vertical end sections and central horizontal portions. The ends of the sections are provided with perforations, through which bolts or screws pass for attaching the same to the gate-posts, while the horizontal sections have vertical perforations for the reception of pivot-bolts d d.
E E refer to two vertical straps or bars, th upper and lower ends of which are bent at right angles and provided with vertical perforations. The ends of these straps are adapted to overlie each other, and by means of the bolts cl d are connected together. Near the lower end of the straps E Eare perforations, through which passes a bolt f, which serves as a bearing or journal for the roller F, upon which a horizontal rail B of the gatepanel slides or moves, said panel preferably having an extended portion at the front end of the gate, which may engage with a latchpin or other device attached to the post a for holding the gate in a closed position. The bolt f not only forms a bearing or journal for the roller, but also assists in holding the straps or hangers together.
The device hereinbefore described is extremely simple and may be made by an ordinary blacksmith, and in practice has been found to serve its purpose admirably, and it not only supports the gate so that it can be opened and closed in the manner indicated, but also braces the post.
It will be obvious that by my improvement- I am not only enabled to producea combined gate hinge, hanger, and roller that will possess all the durability and firmness requisite, but that it can be more cheaply made than other forms, from the fact that short sections of metal, otherwise useless, can be employed, and that in the event of a break or fracture at any particular point the injured portion can be quickly replaced without the necessity of discarding the whole device.
As an improved article of manufacture, a combined metallic gate hinge, hanger, and roller, consisting of the bars E E, each made in a single piece and havingahorizontal central portion, separate vertical straps with in- BENJAWIN HEATH. Witnesses:
