BOTTLE-STOPPER FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,500, dated June 9, 18185.
Application filed April 16, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK MOARDLE, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stopper Fastenings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of bottlestopper fastenings in which the ends of the bail supporting the stopper are made to engage with inclined grooves of the bottle-neck for locking and unlocking the stopper.
One feature of my invention consists in the arrangement of alateral projection on the bottle-neck to receive the inclined grooves, and another in the arrangement of the overhanging edge on the inclined grooves, as hereinafter more fully set forth, the whole being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of a bottle containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal 2 5 section thereof. Fig. 3 is a top view.

The letter A designates the neck of the bottle; B, the bottle-stopper, and O the bail supo porting the stopper. The ends of the bail C are bent to form pivots e, which engage with inclined grooves 8, formed in the bottle-neck, one opposite the other, so that when the bail is adjusted to bring these pivots to one or the 3 5 other ends of the grooves the stopper is locked or unlocked, as the case may be. Each of the inclined grooves begins at a point substantially in the center line of the bottle-neck,and thence extends outward and upward to a point be- 0 yond the side of the neck, where the latter is provided with a lateral projection, O, to allow of such position or extension of the grooves, the advantage of which is, that when the pivots e are moved to the upper ends of the grooves for unlocking the bail, the bail O is brought beyond the side of the bottle-neckpvhich materially facilitates the removal of the stopper from the bottle. Each of the inclined grooves S is provided with an offset, t, at the inner or lower end, the direction of which offset is in an upward direction, and when the bail O is adjusted for locking the stopper the pivots e are received in these offsets, whereby the bail is firmly held in position. The upper edges of the inclined grooves s are made to overhang, as shown in Fig. 2, so that in the move ment of the pivots e the latter comes in contact only with such edges of the groovcs,which obviously reduces friction and affords a superior hold to the pivots. In order to reduce the wear of the overhanging edges of the inclined grooves, such edges are preferably curved, and the pivots e shaped accordingly. It is evident that the overhanging edges are applicable to inclined grooves ()5 located not only in the position described, but also in other positionsas, for example, in the inner or middle portion of the neck of a jar. The portion of the neck which contains the grooves s is flattened, so as to form. two paral- 7o lel straight sides, f f, by which means the distance between the pivots e e is uniform at all times and displacement from the grooves is prevented.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Lot 7 ters Patent, isi 1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the bottleneck having a lateral projection provided with inclined grooves beginning with offsets at a point in So the center line of the neck, and thence ext-ending outward and upward to a point beyond the side of the neck, and the bail supporting the stopper, having its ends provided with pivots for engaging with the grooves and their offsets, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a bail having its ends formed into pivots, of a bottle-neck having a lateral projection and its sides flattened, so as to form two parallel straight surfaces, f f, provided with grooves 88, having overhanging upper edges, said parallel straight surfaces preventing displacement of the pivots from the grooves, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
