XVILLIAM F. BERNSTE-IN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BED-BOTTDM.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 319,178, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed February 5, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. BERN- STEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a bed-bottom embodying my invention, the main part of the covering being removed. Fig. 2 represents alongitndinal section in line a"- .r, 1. Fig. 8 represents an end view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a bed-bottom formed with a folding frame, which is provided with means for bracing the sections thereof and means for adjusting the said bracing, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a frame of a bed-bottom, the same being covered with woven wire or other suitable material, which, however, forms no part of the present invention. The frame is made in sections, which are connected by hinges B, whereby it may be readily folded for convenience of transportation, handling, application to and removal from a bedstead, storage, &c.
Connected with the end rails of the sections of the frame are metallic brackets C, the same being located adjacent to the joint of the sections and receiving the ends of braces D, which are formed of rods or tubes of iron or other suitable metal, and abut against lugs E, which depend from the outer ends of the brackets, said braces thus strengthening the sections of the frame and preventing the end rails from giving or approaching each other. One end of each brace is threaded for the engagement of a nut, F, which bears against the inner side of the bracket 0, whereby by turning the nuts F the braces force the end rails outwardly in opposite directions, and thus tighten the frame when so required. If desired, both ends of a brace may be threaded, so that two nuts are provided for each brace;
but ordinarily a thread at one end of each brace and a single nut thereon is sufficient for my purpose, it being noticed that the end of the brace opposite to the nut abuts against the lug E- of the respective bracket 0 as a hold or stop for said end, while the nut has its bearing on the opposite bracket, and thus displacement of the brace from the brackets is prevented.
In order to prevent the woven wire or other covering of the frame from coming in contact with the braces D, the latter are curved or otherwise bent downwardly, and thus removed sufficiently from the covering so as not to be reached by the same, especially when the bed is occupied, and the braces do not in terfere with the folding of the sections of the frame one on the other.
For the purpose of preventing the sections from folding when in position on a bed, I employ props H, which are hinged or pivoted to the under side of the end rails of the frame and depend therefrom so as to rest on the bed-rails, thus preventing improper closing of the sections of the frame or yielding of the frame at the center thereof. \Vhen the sec tions are folded, the props may also be folded against the end rails of the sections and the braces turned laterally and likewise folded against the sections, whereby the frame and its parts are folded in compact form and cocupy but little space.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bed-frame formed of sections hinged together and provided with brackets having lugs or stops and curved, braces fitted to said brackets and abutting against said lugs, substantially as described.
2. The sections of a bed-frame provided with brackets having lugs or stops and braces fitted to said brackets and abutting against said lugs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I
3. A bed-frame formed of sections hinged together provided with brackets or supports, in combination with braces which are fitted to said brackets and having screw-threads for engagement of tightening-nuts, substantially together provided with props for supporting as and for the purpose set forth. said sections at or near the joint thereof, sub- 4. A bed-frame formed of two sections stantially as and for the purpose set forth. hinged together and provided with pivotal WM. F. BERNSTEIN. 5 props H near the hinge-joints, substantially Witnesses:
as described. JOHN A. WIEDERsHEIM,
-5. A bed-frame formed of sections hinged l A. 1?. GRANT.
