Description

NITED sra'rns Parar rrrcn.
H. GRAY AND W. A. BURY, OF GROSSE ILE, MICHIGAN.
FARM-GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,800, dated March 26, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HORACE GRAY and WILLIAM A. BURY, of Grosse Ile, in the county of Tay-ne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Approach-OpeningGate Attachments; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making' part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view (including gate) Fig. 2 a view from directly over the gate and Fig. 3 the bolt boX with double bolt and balanced catch.
The nature of our invention consists, in providing the upper" end of gate frame A Fig. l with a ratchet wheel B of diameter about one-third the length ot' gate required the ratchets of which to be square sided so vas to work either way. The upper hinge l) is made by rounding the end of frame A and running -it up through cross bar O sutli-` ciently far to furnish a pivot on which to swing lever E Fig. 2 to the long end of which (say from the pivot one half the length of the gate) are attached the ropes F F which actuate it either way from independentposts as you approach or leave the gate. Also to attach to the short end of the lever, far enough from the pivot, to work into the ratchets two pawls Gr and H to traverse the gate and hold it open, leaving end enough to the lever for a staple in which the end of spring I can play to bring the lever to its normal position when the ropes are slackened up. The cross bar under the pawls to be made enough Wider than the lever to throw out both pawls when in the normal position (in order to work the gate by hand in the. usual way) and to hold up the end of one pawl when the other is working. Also to attach to the underside of the lever a line leading down through the cross bar to J Fig. l, thence to a staple K, thence down to the upper bolt L Fig. 3 which by means of bal anced catch M hooks into eye N on the upper end of the lower bolt.
'By pulling the handleof either rope you draw the lever toward Ayou which immediately raises both bolts clear of catch O (on the gate) and sets the opposite pawl into the ratchets opening the gate from. you, (see dotted linesFig. 2) also throwing the upper end of balanced catch M Fig. 3 against bevele-d slot P inside of bolt boX and releasing the lower bolt it drops to dotted lines Q and remains until thrown up by catch O when the gate shuts, whereupon balanced catch M takes hold again of eye N. After drawing the lever you slack up the rope and the spring l throws the lever back to its normal position when you again draw and slack until the gate is wide open. Passing through you draw and slack the other rope alternately until the gate is closed and latched.
)What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of lever E, with pawls Gr and H, the ratchet wheel B, the spring I, and catch M and its concomitant parts all as herein described.
