Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE'.
JOHN M. TABER, OF GREENWICH, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAY-ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,045, dated April 22, 1862.'
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. TABER, ofthe town of Greenwich, in the county ot' Washington and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hay-Elevator; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, reference heilig had to the accompany ing drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Like letters in said drawings refer to like parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view ot' my elevator ready for use. Fig. 2 shows an elevation ot' the same as it appears after the contents have been discharged.
My hay-elevator, as represented in Figs. l and 2, consists of' two gang-forks, A A', united at their upper extremities by a joint, K, thus forming a head. To this head is attached a ring, O, through which pass the ropes E and F. The rope E passesiunder the sheave a in the block G, and is fastened to the gang-fork A' at the staple or ring g. The rope or chain F passes down under a pulley, i, Fig. 2, attached to the fork A',and is fastened to a pin, b, in the block G. rIhese two ropes or chains are joined at a point above and form the singie rope B, which rope passes up over a pulley above for the purpose of raising the elevator. The tines of the two gang-forks A and A' are prevented from coming in collision by means ot' the spring D.
When the elevator is in use the block G is attached to the fork A by means of the bar c in the block G, and is held in place by the hook d and the trip-latch e. To thislatch is attached a cord, H, which passes over a pulley, m, in the gang-fork A', and is used by the operator for the purpose ot'detaching the block G from the hook d and allowing the two gang-forks to spread asunder, thus disenga ging the load. To prepare the elevator for another operation, all that is necessary is to fasten the block G in the hook d. The cord I is attached to the elevator at the point o for the purpose ot' managing and controlling the same after the desired elevation has been attained.
The advantages claimed for this elevator over others are, first, the joiningof the two forks at the head K, so as to avoid collision with adjacent obstavles in its ascent; second, by the process here adopted o t' attaching the ropes E and F beneath the head or joint K the gravity ot the load operates to bring the two forks more lirmly together; third, the fa cility ot discharging its contents by the arrangement ot` means here employed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the gang-forks A A', united, as described, with the block G, and ropes or chains E and F, in the manner and for the purpose specified;
In testimony whereof I have, on this 18th day of December, 1861, set my hand.
JOHN M. TABER.
