[fig m m w WW D Witnesse; lnv enton A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LAYLAND', OF MIXERVILLE, INDIANA.
CAR-COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,657, dated January 18, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM LAYLAND, of Mixerville, in the county of Franklin and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad-Car Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
Similar letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to certain improvements in car coupling, hereinafter described, by which cars may be rendered self coupling and the tender readily coupled or uncoupled to or from the neXt rear car, by the attendant upon the locomotive.
Figure l is a side view of railroad tender and car frame, representing the coupling in working condition. Fig. 2 is a plan taken from the top, the coupling being in the same position as in Fig. 1.
(F, T) is a combined adjustable clevis and latch, hinged to a support (a) by means of a bolt (0) and adjustable, so that, either the clevis (F) or latch (T) may be used, by means of the lever (L) rod (R) and lever (N) is a clevis hinged to a support (M) by means of the bolt (0) which is formed square at the points where it passes through the clevis (C, I) is a lever formed with a working joint (g) and is arranged for the purpose of operating the clevis (N) when it is desired to uncouple the cars.
(T) is a latch, firmly secured to a support (M) and formed with a receding depressed point (d) so that the clevis into which it may be required to work, may always be caught and made to ride up on the latch (T).
The combined latch and clevis, is intended to be used only upon the tender.
hen it may be required to uncouple the cars, the lever (I, G) will be depressed by means of which the bolt (0) working in the support (M) will be turned toward the car, and the outer end of the clevis (N) elevated until free from the latch When it is required to couple the cars, they are made to approach each other in the ordinary manner, and to couple themselves by means of the clevis (N) riding up on the latch (T) until it falls over the catch. The attendant may adjust the combined latch and clevis (F, T) by turning the lever wheel which operates the lever (6) rod (R) and lever (L).
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The employment of the combined adjustable lat-ch and catch, (F, T) when constructed and operated, substantially as herein described, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony of which invention I have hereunto set my hand.
W'ILLIAM LAYLAND.
