Description

Car Couplin'g.
.- Patented Dec. 27, 1859.
UNITED STAWENT @met J. G. GOSHON, OF SHIPPENSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TOHIMSELF, i
J. WONDERLICH, AND H. R. RUBY, OF SAMEPLAMCE. l 1
RAILROAD-CAR COUPLING.
Specification j of Letters `Pefte11t1\To.
description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in the several figures of which similar characters of referencedenote the same part.
Figure l `is a top view of draw bar with my coupling attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line :c m of Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a vertical section on line g/ y. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line m m of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a top view of draw bar showing the projection or bearing of the bolt.`
The nature of my invention consistsin a longitudinally moving shaft held in position by a semicircular spring, and to which the bolt is attached. When the cars come t0- gether the link presses .against the bolt and turns the shaft until it passes the bolt, which then falls back and catches in the link, and the draft pulls the bolt against the projection of the draw bar which prevents it from coming out. The shaft also has an arm on top by which it may be turned and the bolt raised out of the way, in uncoupling the cars by hand, until the link is removed. In case of a car running off the track the sudden jerk to one side causes the spring to yield and draws the shaft aside thus allowing the 26,568, dated :December 12v; 185e.`
bolt to slip out `ofthe link and of course uncoupling the cars.
In the drawlng D drawbar. l
is the drawbarA the` 3 longitudinal moving shaft, S` the springl which holds it in position, a" the bolt,xb the u l arm of the shaft,"andc the projection ofthe In coupling the cars,when they comejtof gether the link forces thebolt a backl until it passes it, when it falls back and is inserted c in the link, the draft pulling it against the 3 j projection c and thuskeepinv itin l l Should a'car be thrown .ofi `the track, the
wrench to one side; :causes the spring "S to yield and forces the shaft A and bolt a tol one side andeasily slipsthelink off the bolt;
thus uncoupling the cars and reventing the l rest of the train. from being t rown off` the track. In uncoupling the carsbyhandyby turning `the arm b, of the shaft A, the bolt a is raised out of the way` while the link is being removed.
Having thus I claim-` The longitudinalmoving shaft Ain com-c` bination with the spring `S,`\bolt`6h arm :band l y Projection c substantially as fori the@ purposes set forth. Y l l In testimony whereof If have hereunto` M c5 signed my name before two subscribing witnesses. i j i `1 1. .c J, G GOSI-ION. g Vitnesses: Q c i RANELS C. BARYHUBER,
