Description

(No Model.)
- E. H. BAUGH & 0. W. SELVIDGE. HOISTING ATTACHMENT FUR WAGON BEDS.
No. 496,471. Patented May 2, 1893.
STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EDWARD H. BAUGI-I AND CHARLES TV. SELVIDGE, OF MEXIA, TEXAS.
HOISTING ATTACHMENT FOR WAGON-BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,471, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed December 31, 1892. Serial No. 456,853. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDWARD H. BAUGH and CHARLES W.'SELv1DeE, citizens of the United States, residing at Mexia,in the county of Limestone and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Attachments to VVagon-Beds; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a hoisting attachment to wagon beds that can be quickly and easily connected thereto and as readily removed when not in use, and is simple in construction with the necessary strength to support the weight of the wagon bed and is capable of being manufaotured at a comparatively small cost so as to bring it within the reach of those requiring such a device.
The above objects we attain by a device constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view showing our improved device applied to a wagon bed. Fig. 2 a detail view of the device partly in section and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 a detail sectional view taken on line y y of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the wagon bed and B the overhead beams of rafters upon the interior of a barn, stable or wagon-house, as the case may be, which have connected to them suitable pulleys a 1), these parts being shown simply to better illustrate the application and use of the hoisting device which alone forms the subject of my invention.
The device consists in part of a cast or wrought metal frame 0 having its lower end bifurcated as shown at D in Fig. 1, to which are connected chains or ropes 0 provided at their outer ends with suitable hooks cl to catch over the projecting ends of one of the sills H of the wagon bed.
The frame 0 is provided with a Windlass E which is connected to a shaft 6, said shaft having its bearings in the sides of the frame and having connected to one end a suitable handle F for operating the Windlass which re volves with the shaft. The Windlass is provided at one end with the usual ratchet f with which engages a pawl g pivoted to the frame of the device. The rope hwhich is connected to the Windlass passes up through a central hole 2' in the upper end of the frame 0 and thence over the pulleys a b after which the free end of the rope is connected in any suitable manner to the opposite end of the wagonbed, either by looping it around the same as shown, or in any other preferred way as found most desirable, and in this position the wagonbed is elevated by turning the Windlass and winding the rope thereon. The central hole 'i forms a guide for the rope when the windlass is being turned and the bifurcated end D forms a strong and simple means of attaching the ends of the ropes or chains to which the hooks are connected. After the hooks d are engaged with the projecting ends of the sill some means should be employed for holding the device in position on the end of the wagonbed while the rope his being engaged with the pulleys and the opposite end of the wagonbed. In order to attain this end a very simple and practical attachment is employed that will adapt itself to the end-gate of the wagon bed and consists in a swivel connection, embracing a hook G which is swiveled to the frame 0 in the following manner. On the upper end of the frame near one side are lugs k for pivotally supporting the ends of a head or bar Z and through this bar loosely passes the shank of the hook G which is headed upon its end to prevent it from pulling out, thus swiveling the hook to the frame and enabling said hook to adapt itself to any projections upon the outside of the end-gate so that the hook in any case can be made to engage with the upper edge of the gate to support the frame 0 while the rope is being connected to the .pulleys and opposite end of the wagon-bed.
Any suitable form of swivel hook may be used and any means may be employed for forming a swivel connection between the hook and the end of the frame, and any changes or modifications may be made in the details of construction as would come within the scope of the invention.
Having now fully described our invention,
what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hoisting device for wagon beds, consisting of a suitable frame, a Windlass connected thereto, a hoisting-rope attached to the lower end of the frame and having hooks to engage with the sill of the wagon-bed, said frame having a hole at its upper end for the hoisting rope, and a hook connected to the frame IO and adapted to engage the upper edge of the end-grate of the wagon-bed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimonythat we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses. v
