JAMES MONTGOMERY SEYMOUR, or CLEVELAND, OHIO.
' STOVE ATTACHMENT FOR GRATES AND FIRE-PLACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no. 317,863, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed March 26, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove Attachments for Grates and Fire-Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying three sheets of drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is aperspective View of the attachment as applied to a grate to adapt the same for cooking purposes. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the attachment as applied to a grate for heating purposes. Fig. 3 is a perspcctive rear view of the detachable front removed. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through line :0 m, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view through line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a similar view through the line .2 2, Figs. 1 and 4. Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view through the middle of the attachment as the same is represented in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a similar view through the middle of the attachment as the same is representedin Fig. 2; and Figs. 9, 10, 11, and 12 are detail views of the adjusting devices and adjustable slides which are used in connection with and form part of the attachment.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to an attachment for grates and fire-places, whereby the same may be converted either into a cookingrange or a stove for heating purposes; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of the adjustable, removable, and separable attachment, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes the front, which has one or more doors, B, provided with suitable draft-openings adapted to be closed by slides or in any other suitable manner. This front has a vertically-adjustable top, 0, having slots D, through which screws E are inserted, having nuts F, by tightening which the adjustable top 0 may be fastened in its adjusted position. The
(No model.)
, frontis further provided with adjustable sides G, having arms 9, which are slotted longitudinally, as shown at h, for the insertion of nutted screws or bolts H, bytightening the nuts of which it will be seen that the adj ustable sides G may be fastened upon the front A in their adjusted position. These sides are also provided with vertically-adjustable tops I, slotted am, and working on nutted screws J (see Fig. 10,) by tightening the nuts of which it will be seen that the adjustable or eXtensible sliding tops I may be fastened upon the sides G in their adjusted position.
The top shown at K is provided with theusual fire-holes and covers for the same, and is provided with a hinged back, L, having extensible sides or slides M, Fig. 12, having arms in, provided with screws or studs n,
which project through slots Z in the hingedback piece, L. This back plate is provided with lugs f on its back, which, in conjunction with the screws or studs 12, form guides for the arms at when the adjustable slides M are moved forward or back. The top Kis similarly provided with lateral extensible sides or slides 0, Fig. .11, provided with headed studs or screws 0, which work in the' side slots, 0, in the top plate,.K, so that by tightening down these screws the adjustable slides may be fastened in their adjusted posi-' tion.
I will here state that the adjustable sides or slides of the front part, top plate, hinged back, and sides may be placed either on the inside or on the outside of their respective parts, according to choice, their operation and manner of adjustment being in both cases the same.
The top plate, K, is supported at its front end upon brackets P, fastened adjustably in dovetailed lugs Q on the front A. The hori zontal arms of these brackets have slots 19, Fig. 6, for the insertion of screws 0, inserted through the top K, and adapted to be nutted to the slotted brackets.
The hinged back L may be adjusted at any desired angle to fit the throat-piece of the grate or fire-place by means of a screw, R,working in a bracket, S, Fig. 9, and bearing with its inner end against the segment or hearing T, provided with a series of recesses adapted to engage the inner end of the screw R. The seg ment has a projection, U, adapted to be in serted into a hole or recess made in the back part or rear wall of the fire-place, and having a hole, a, through which a hook or bolt may be inserted for the purpose of holding it in place. The top plate, K, is further provided with rearwardly-projecting lugs V, Fig. 11, adapted to fit into recesses made in the rear part of the fire-place, if desired, for their reception, and forming additional supports for the top part of the attachment. The hinged back L is provided with suitable draft-openings,W, closed by a slide in the usual way, or in any other suitable manner.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the manner of using this attachment will be readily understood without requiring extended explanation. It will be seen that the several parts of the attachmeh:t-viz the front, the sides, the top, and the hinged back-may be adjusted by means of their adjustable slides to fit any size of grate or fireplace, as well as any shape thereof, the attachment being of course made in different sizes or numbers, so that by selecting the proper size it may readily be adjusted to the dimensions and shape of that particular kind of grate or fire-place for which the attachment is intended to be used. The hinged back L may, by means of its. adjustment upon thetop platabe adjusted at any desired angle, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7, thereby enablingthe attachment to be fitted up against the throat-piece .of the grate or fire-place.
If the attachment is to be used for heating purposes, a heating-drum, a, made of sheet metal, cast-iron, or any other suitable material, is placed over the fire-holes, as shown in Figs. 2 and8. Where this attachment is used, the hinged back L is .set up against the back part of the fire-place, as shown in Fig. 8, so as to shut off the draft and cause the products of combustion to pass up through the drum, and through its fine b,which is provided with a switabledamper, into the chimney.
Having thus described my invention, I do not in this present application claim anything which forms the subject-matter of the claims in another application filed by me on the 5th day of July, 1884; but
What I herein claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The herein-described removable and adjustable stove attachment for grates and fireplaces, consisting of the separable front A, sides G, top K, and hinged back L, said several separable parts being providedwith adj ustable slides and means for fixing said slides upon their respective parts in their adjusted position,to adapt the parts when put together to fit upon a grate or fire-place, and adapt the same to be used for cooking or heating purposes, substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the front A, having doors B, andn-utted screws E and H, adj ustable top slide, 0, adjustable sides G, and vertically-adjustable side slides, I, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. The combination of the front A, adjustable top slide,0, adjustable sides G,verticallyadjustable side slides,I,slotted brackets P,top plate, K, and adjustable top slides, 0, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
4:. The combination of' the removable and adjustable top K, adjustable top. slides, 0, hinged back L,means for fastening'the hinged back upon the top plate at its proper angle or position, and adjustable slides M, adapted to be fastened upon the hinged back in their adjusted position, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. JAMES MQNTGOMERY SEYMOUR.
