Description
April 6, 1965 P. MARACH 3,
MATCH BOOK Filed May 29, 1963 IN VEN TOR Paul NARACH PA TE N 7' A6! United States Patent 3,176,835 MATCH BOOK Paul Marach, 6361 Marquette St., Montreal, Quebec, Canada Filed May 29, 1963, Ser. No. 284,158 2 Claims. (Cl. 206-29) The present invention relates to a match book and has for its main object the provision of a match book which is adapted to be removably secured to a cigarette pack of standard construction without in any way altering the construction of aid cigarette pack, such as to form a com bined cigarette pack and match book which can be easily inserted and carried in ones pocket.
Another object of the present invention resides in the provision of a match book of the character described, which can be easily aflixed to any surface, such as the dashboard of an automobile, an ashtray, or the like.
An important object of the invention resides in the provision of a match book in which the matches are completely enclosed and cannot be ignited by a flying spark, whereby the match book is very safe to use.
Yet another important object of the present invention resides in the provision of a match book of the character described, in which the tail ends of the matches are disposed in staggered relationship, so that each match may be easily pulled off the match book to remove the same and Without dislodging the remaining matches.
The foregoing and other important objects of the present invention will become more apparent during the following disclosure and by referring to the drawings, in which:
FTGURE 1 is a perspective View of the match book of the present invention, attached to a standard cigarette pack which is partially shown;
FIGURE 3 is a longitudinal section of the assembled match book and cigarette pack and taken along line 3-3 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the top of the inner member defining the housing of the match book;
FIGURE 5 is a plan view of the bottom of the outer member defining the housing of the match book;
FIGURE 6 is an end elevation of the match book showing the side flanges in folded back position, which is the condition in which the match book is sold; and
FIGURE 7 shows an end elevation of the match book with the side flanges outwardly bent, with the match book shown adhered to a support surface.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like elements throughout, the match book in accordance with the present invention comprises an inner housing member 1, an outer housing member 2, and a plurality of individual matches 3, all these elements being preferably made of cardboard material.
Inner housing member 1 has, in blank form, the shape shown in FEGURE 4; it comprises a generally rectangular piece of sheet material provided with two spaced longitudinally extending, parallel score lines 4 defining a web part 5 and side flanges 6; the ends of said side flanges 6 are preferably bevelled, as shown at 7.
The marginal end portions of the top face of web part 5 are coated with a layer 8 of pressure adhesive.
The underface of the end marginal portions of the web part 1% are coated with a layer of pressure adhesive 14. Each housing member 1 and 2 is folded about its score lines 4 and 9 respectively so as to form a member of U-shaped cross-section; the inner member 1 is nested within the outer member 2 with the side flanges of both members in contact and adhered condition, there being an intermediate layer of glue 15 between said pair of side flanges.
The two web parts 5 and 1d are spaced one from the other to define a space or housing, together with the side flanges, which is open at both ends thereof, as shown by openings 16. This housing receives the matches 3.
As shown in FIGURE 3, the matches 3 are preferably disposed in two groups of two rows each. The head or ignitable end 3' of the matches of the two groups faces each other within the center part of the housing, while the tail end-3" of the two groups protrudes outwardly from the housing at both ends thereof through'the openings 16.
The matches of each row are disposed side by side in a substantially common plane, but are completely separate from each other. The matches of the outer row are staggered with respect to the matches of the inner row, such that the tail end 3" of the matches of the outer row protrudes outwardly from the tail end of the matches of the inner row.
The matches are maintained in position within the housing in the following manner:
The matches of the upper row removably adhere to the layer 14 of pressure adhesive on the inside face of the outer housing member 2, while the matches of the inner row removably adhere to the layer of pressure adhesive 8 on the top face of the inner housing member 1. The depth of the housing in the central part thereof is greater than its depth in the zone of openings 16 in order to accommodate the head ends 3 of the matches 3. This is ob tained by slightly longitudinally folding the Web 10 of the outer housing member 2 and fitting the same over the inner housing member 1; thus, the edges of the V-shaped notches 14 of the side flanges 11 are brought together.
The. bottom face of the inner housing member 1 is preferably completely covered with a layer of pressure adhesive 17. The match book is further provided with a match igniting strip 13, which is preferably positioned to adhere to the outside face of a side flange 11 of the outer housing member 2 as shown in FIGURE 1, said strip 18 extending across the slit provided by the edges of the notch 13.
The customer will buy the match book in the condition shown in FTGURE 6 with the side flanges 6, 11 folded back about score lines 4- and 9 against the inner face of the inner housing member 1. The side wings or flanges 6, 1 1 are held in this position due to the adhesion provided by the layer of pressure adhesive 17. The user simply opens up the side flanges 6, 11, and the match book can be fitted with web part 5 over the edge face 20 of a standard cigarette pack 21 and With the inside faces of the side flanges 6 overlying the main faces 22 of the cigarette pack.
The match book is removably adhered to the cigarette pack due to the presence of the layer of pressure adhesive 17 The distance separating the side flanges 6 is approximately equal to the width of the edge face 20 of the cigarette pack 21, said Width being standard for 'hard packs of 20 and 25 cigarettes.
The match book can also be removably aflixed to any soft type cigarette pack by changing its dimensions, if necessary.
One can also afiix in a removable manner the match book in accordance with the invention to any underlying surface 23, as shown in FIGURE 7. The side wings provided by the flanges 6 and 11 are just tfolded outwardly and adhered to surface 23 by means of adhesive.
If matches still remain after emptying of the cigarette pack "associated therewith, the match book can be removed therefrom and affixed to a new full cigarette pack.
While a preferred embodiment in accordance with the present invention has been illustrated and described, it is understood that various modifications have been resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
