This invention relates generally to merchandise packaging. More particularly, my present invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in the packaging of explosive units,
such, for instance, as railway torpedoes and the like, and has for its primary object the inexpen sive, efficient packaging of railway torpedoes and the like simply, economically, and compactly in M such manner as to enable their convenient portability and at the same time not only preserve the several torpedoes from injury or accidental detonation due to shock or friction with one another or with external objects, but also accessibly present the several torpedoes for successive removal for use.
And with the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the package presently described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a plan view of a torpedo-engaging strip forming part of the package of my present invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a torpedo of the type for co-operation with the strip of Figure 1 in the formation of the present package;

Referring now in more detail and by reference characters to the drawing, which illustrates preferred embodiments of my invention, A designates a railway torpedo of the type which comprises a body a of detonable material suitably equipped with a bendable mounting strip a preferably formed of soft fusible metal for securing the torpedo, as occasion may require, to and upon a rail, as will be well understood.
B designates a packaging-strip, which is preferably die or otherwise suitably cut from a sheet of cardboard or other suitable relatively inexpensive material and provided for the most part at regular predetermined intervals with obliquely Figure 6 is a side elevational view of a partially 1938, Serial No. 223,220 (on. 206-56) extending zones of weakness in the form preferably of lines of perforations I, so that the strip B may be readily divided into sections by tearing. Intermediate the perforation-lines l, the strip B is marginally cut away, as at 2, in the provision of opposed cut-outs or recesses, the width of the strip B intermediate the base of opposed marginal recesses or cut-outs 2 correspondingly substantially to the width of the torpedo body a, as best seen in Figures 3, 4, and 5. In practice, accordingly, a torpedo A is placed at its body a flatwise upon the strip B intermediate two of the opposed marginal cut-outs 2 and the projecting end-portions of the mounting-strip a bent completely around the strip B and then 1 overlappingly upon the top face of the torpedobody a, also as best seen in Figures 3 and 4. Thus the respective torpedoes A are individually readily detachably mounted for packaging upon the strip B.
Now, preferably for convenience in compactly housing or packaging a dozen torpedoes A within an easily portablefhandy-size carton,,such, for instance, as the carton C, Figure 8, the strip B isjnotonly of size and shape to accommodate twelve torpedoes A, but is also provided with a single score or hinge-line 3 and a pair of score or hinge-lines 4, 4, all extending transversely of the strip B at right-angles to its opposite side margins, the hinge-lines 3 and 4, 4, being so spaced and located on the strip B as to divide the strip B into three substantially equally sized and suitably shaped panels b, b and b and the hinge-lines 4, 4, being also so spaced one from the other as to provide a spacing or packing panel b intermediate the adjoining panels I} and 13 all as best seen in Figure 1 and for purposes presently appearing.
Hence, when the strip B is fully loaded, as it may be said, with twelve torpedoes A and is to be housed in a carton or other container C, the loaded end-panel b is first bent backwardly about the hinge-1ine 3 to overlie the rear face of the intermediate panel 17 The strip B is then bent on the hinge-lines 4,4, so that the opposite endpanel I) is likewise disposed in overlying relation to both panels b and b Thus the end-panel b, when so folded, is disposed intermediate the panels b and b and is neatly accommodated in such location by the spacing-panel b as best seen in Figure '7.
So loaded and folded, thestrip B and its attached torpedoes A may be snugly fitted or packaged within the container C, and, at the same time, the several torpedoes A are securely held with their respective explosive portions a out of abrasive or rubbing contact one with the other.
When it is desired to remove a torpedo A from the container C for operative disposition upon a railroad rail or for some other purpose, a single torpedo A and its embraced portion of the strip 13 may be readily torn off along the adjacent line of Weakness or perforations I, as best seen in Figure 5, and the particular torpedo A detached from the strip-portion by reverse bending of its strip (1. Thus the several torpedoes A of the package may be conveniently successively removed for use. The package, as a whole, is inexpensive, readily formed, conveniently and safely portable, and efficient in its intended purposes, and it is to be understood that changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the package and their method of assembly may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a strip having spaced sets of opposed marginal recesses and a transverse zone of weakness intermediate said sets of recesses, of a plurality of track-torpedoes each comprising a body-portion disposed upon the strip intermediate the recesses of a respective pair and a mounting-strap having its end-portions bent in torpedo-retaining engagement about the strip at said respective recesses.
2. The combination with a strip having spaced sets of opposed marginal recesses and an obliquely extending line of perforations providing a zone of weakness intermediate said sets of recesses, of a plurality of track torpedoes each comprising a body-portion disposed upon the strip intermediate the recesses of a respective pair and a mounting-strap having its end-portions bent in torpedo-retaining engagement about the strip at said respective recesses.
3. In a package, in combination, a strip and a plurality of track-torpedoes detachably mounted on the strip, the detonable bodies of said torpedoes being disposed upon the upper face of said strip, the strip having spaced hinge-lines dividing the strip into opposite end-panels and intermediate. main and spacing panels, the latter being disposed between the intermediate panel and the end-panel and having a width substantially equal to the thickness of the torpedo-body, the end-panels being oppositely foldable one over the other and over the intermediate main panel, so that the respective upper faces thereof are presented away from each other and said spacing panel being disposed at an end of the folded strip and spacing the outer folded end-panel from the intermediate main panel whereby the detonable bodies on the several panels are held out of contact with each other.
4. In a package, in combination, a strip, a plurality of track-torpedoes detachably mountedon the strip, the detonable bodies of said torpedoes being disposed upon the upper face of said strip, said strip further having spaced hinge-lines dividing-the strip into a first panel, an intermediate panel adjoining the inner end of said first panel, a spacing panel adjoining the other end of the intermediate panel, and a second panel adjoining the other end of the spacing panel, said first and intermediate panels being foldable into back-to-back relationship and said second panel being foldable into spaced parallel relationship over, and with its under face presented toward, said first panel whereby the detonable bodies on the several panels are held out of contact with each other.
5. A packaging strip for track-torpedoes each having a body-portion and outwardly extending mounting straps, said strip comprising an elongated member having a series of spaced transversely disposed lines of weakness and provided along its opposed longitudinal margins with series of indentations, each indentation being disposed centrally between a pair of said lines for mounting a torpedo-body upon a face of the strip and the mounting-straps to extend in side-by-side relation over the under face of the strip.
6. A packaging strip for track-torpedoes each having a body-portion and outwardly extending viding the strip into a plurality of panels foldable one over the other.
