NEW YORK, N. Y.
MATCH BOX AND IGNITER.
Application filed January 17,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
1911. Serial No. 603,041.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, HENRY K. Kiso, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Match Box and Igniter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
'My invention relates to a combined matchbox and igniter, so constructed that the withdrawal of a match from the box lights it at the same time.
The main object of my invention is to provide a neat, compact, inexpensive pouch in which may be carried matches, which of a match will cause it to ignite.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device whereby the pressing of the pouch between the thumb and fore-finger will exert a pressure on the pouch across the entire device, so that a match withdrawn from any position will be ignited. I attain these results by constructing my folder of two parts, with a layer of sand-paper upon the inner faces of the parts, and attaching a binding strip or equalizer about the upper end of the pouch, in order to distribute the pressure applied at any point along this equalizer.
lVith the above and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a preferred embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing my pouch or box in an open position.
In the match-box or pouch herein disclosed, I have shown a box made of an integral sheet of paper, cardboard or similar substance, comprising sides 1 and 2 fastened together by an integral bottom hingl ing portion 3. The sideQ is slightly longer than the side 1, in order to provide a flap 4, which is adapted to be folded over and inserted between the ends of the matches 5 and the outer end 6 of the side 1, as shown in Fig. 2, said matches being inserted with their heads down. On the sides 1 and 2 of the pouch and near the upper outer edge, are placed opposing sheets of sand-paper 7 and 8, across which the match is to be drawn. The head of the match coming in contact with this sand-papercd surface as the match is rapidly withdrawn, will cause the head of the match to be scratched thereby and ignited.
In a device of this kind, it is of decided advantage to provide a device whereby any match may be withdrawn and ignited, irrespective of where the pressure is applied. In order to accomplish this purpose, I have inserted, near the upper end of the pouch and on the outside of the case opposite the sand-papered surface on each of the members 1 and 2, a cardboard equalizer 9, the outer edges 10 of which are beveled outwardly. About the pouch and on a line with the equalizer and sand-papered surface, is a band 11 which holds the different parts in position and fastens the two sides of the pouch together.
In order to withdraw a match from the box, it is only necessary to withdraw the flap 4: from its inserted position, as shown in Fig. 2; to hold the pouch between the thumb and the fore-finger at any point along the band 11, and with the other hand, withdraw one of the matches with a rapid movement. The fore-finger and the thumb will exert a pressure upon the equalizer, which will be distributed along the sand-papered surface, so that the withdrawal of any match will cause the same to come in contact with the pressed sand-papered surface, which will scratch the match and ignite the same.
Many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof.
It is intended that all matters contained herein in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claim is merely intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, Which as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetvveen, and that materials, sizes and relativities of parts are non-essential, except as called for in the claim.
Having thus described my invention, ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A match box, comprising a pouch having oppositely-disposed parts facing each other, a layer of sand-paper upon the inside of each part, cardboard equalizers disposed on the outside of the pouch on the side opposite said sand-paper, the outer edge of each of said equalizers being beveled outwardly, and a band disposed about said pouch in line with said equalizers and said sandpapered parts, whereby pressure upon any part of said equalizer Will'be distributed at every point along said sand-papers surface, to ignite the matches as they are Withdrawn from any part of the pouch.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HENRY K. KISQ.
