COMBINED MATCH AND CIGARETTE BOX.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11,1916.
A Application filed October 7, 1914. Serial No. 865,531.
object to provide a box wherein the bottom I or top thereof is constructed to contain matches which are readily accessible for the convenient use by a smoker.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a box of this character wherein the matches when removed singly from the pocket therefor on the said box will be ignited for the lighting of a cigarette in the usual manner, the box being'of novel form to serve as a container for cigarettes and matches.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a box of this character which is simple in construction, compact, holding the cigarettes and matches in a convenient manner for the user, reliable and efiicient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufac ture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 isa vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of box, showing the cover partly broken away. it ig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the box comprises a rectangular shaped body 5, preferably made from stifi' cardboard, although it may be made from any other suitable material, and has fitted thereon as usual a removable cover or top 6, and this box is adapted to contain cigarettes to serve as a carton therefor.
Secured to the opposite side edges and to one end edge of the cover or top 6 of. the
box are the down-turned flanges 7 of a covering 8 forming a pocket 9 open at a point removed from one end of the cover or top 6 f the box. However, it is to be understood that this covering 8 may be mounted upon the body of the box in a like manner as its mountlng upon the top or cover thereof, and into this pocket 9 extend the headed ends of a card of pasteboard matches 10, while the opposite unbroken end 11 of the card is fastened to the uncovered end edge of thetop or cover 6 of the box, so that by separating each match from the card the same can be withdrawn from the open end of the pocket 9 formed by the covering 8 for use in lighting the cigarettes when removed from the box.
Secured to the inner face of the covering 8 at the open end of the'pocket 9 formed thereby is a sandpaper strip 12 which is designed to ignite each match 10 when withdrawn from the pocket, it being only necessary to press upon the covering 8 at the open end thereof to bring the sandpaper in frictional contact with the head of the match 10 when being withdrawn from the pocket for use thereof.
In Figs. 3 and 4 is shown a slight modification of box, wherein the cover or top 13 has a covering 14 secured throughout its marginal edges 15 to the walls of the cover or top 13 to form an inclosure or closed pocket 16 for a plurality of wood matches 17 of the ordinary construction, the same being arranged in a single row, and resting upon the top or cover 13 of the box. To the inner face of the covering 14 at one end of the box is a sandpaper strip 18 with which contacts the head of each match 17 when being removed from the inclosure or pocket 16, the covering 14 being broken away from time to time at one end of the box to permit access to be had to the matches 17 for their removal. \Vhen each match is removed, pressure is exerted against the covering 14 directly over the sandpaper strip 18, so that on withdrawing the match from the inclosure or pocket 16 the head thereof will frietionally engage with the sandpaper strip 18 for the ignition of the match during the withdrawal of the same from the inclosure or pocket formed by the covering 14. on the top 13 of the box. Preferably the matohes employed are of the safety type instead of the ordinary form of match, although the latter may be used if found desirable.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is A box lid comprising a body having a marginal rim adapting it for detachable and telescopic engagement with the box, a sheet of material of a size for covering a greater portion of the lid body and having three of its edges fixed throughout their length to the outer face of the marginal rim of said body to provide a pocket exteriorly of the lid between the body thereof and said sheet of material, a strip having a plurality of stems arranged in spaced parallel relation to each other and provided with inflammable heads .at their free ends, said strip being fixed exteriorly to themarginal rim of the lid body, with the stems bent at right angles thereto and inserted in the pocket for the-
