MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
Application filed November 29, 1920. Serial No. 427,112.
To @ZZ 'whom 'it' may concer/n:
Be it knovvn that I, Jnssn B. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States of America, reswiding at 1Rush, in the county of Boyd and .btate of Kentucky, have invented neiv and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, -of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a single delivery match box adapted to ignite the matches as they are successively Withdrawn therefrom and designed to be used as a pocket or portable holder or carrier for matches to protect the same against damage from moisture; and `with this object in vieiv the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, .vherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the match box.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional vieiv of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Llis a plan vievr of the blank from which the body portion of the box is formed.
Fig. 5 is a similar vieiv of one of the end 'g1 G a similar vieiv of the blank from i l. the delivery tube is formed.
u 7 and S are plan views respectively of the blanks from ivhich the bracing piece and delivery tube bracket are formed.
The box consists of a blank such as indicated in nig. 4 which is folded upon itself near its center to form a bottom l() and side vvalls 11 which are contracted near their upper free edges to form a delivery seat 12 in vvhich is revolubly mounted a delivery tube 13 consisting of the roll portion of the blank illustrated in Fig. 6. This tube is longitudinally slotted as shown at 1i, the slot being formed by displacing the edges of the blank at an interval sufficient to permit of the passage of a match7 so that when the slot is positioned by the rotation of the tube to communicatc with the interior of the box a match from the storage compartment formed by the body of the box may drop laterally thereinto whereupon the turning of the tube vvill cut off communication between the storage compartment and the tube and the tilting of the box toward one end will cause an end-Wise movement of the match to expose one end thereof in position to be grasped by the operator. The delivery end of the tube as shown at 15 is contracted or reduced and internally corrugated or roughened as shown at 16 so that as the matches are Withdravvn from the tube the frictional contact of the head thereof with the roughened surface of the tube will ignite the same. Preferably the discharge end of the tube is slotted or notched to allow it to yield under the strain of drawing the match head therethrough, so as to prevent the Wedging of the match head and an unnecessary amount of resistance to the Withdrawal of the match.
The opposite end of the tube is open and is adapted to have matches fed thereinto to charge the reservoir or storage compartment.
The blank shown in Fig. 6 from which the delivery tube is formed is provided with a lateral tongue 17 which .is rolled or coiled to form a knob arranged exteriorly of the box by Which the tube may be turned to separate a match from the stock contained in the storage compartment.
The ends of the box are closed by end Tvalls l'provided with lateral ears 19 which extend through slots 20 formed in the side walls, and the end edges of the latter are flanged as shown at 21 to fold over the end Walls and thus provide a moisture excluding receptacle. The end Walls are also provided with lateral ears 22 Which are bent inwardly into engagement with the contracted portion of the side Walls to maintain the free edges of the blank forming said Walls in proper relation to properly house the dispensing or delivery tube.
The portions of the end Walls which cover the ends of the delivery seat are provided with openings forming bearings for the delivery tube. and a bracket is arranged as shown at 23 to extend around the knob 17 to provide against end-Wise displacement of the delivery tube While permitting the rotation thereon. In the construction illustrated said bracket consists of an angular member 24: having a terminal tongue 25 engaged with the upper end of the adjacent end Wall and having a bearing 26 for the trunnion 27 provided by the portion of the delivery tube projecting beyond the plane of the knob 17 and a bracing piece 28 having reduced terminals 29 which are respectively engaged with openings in the adjacent end Tvall and the extremity of the angular member 24.
It will be understood that in operation `claimed as new and useful is p 1. A match box having a storage compartment provided with a communicating tubular seat, and a dispensing or delivery tube revolubly mounted in said seat and provided with a longitudinal slot for communication with the storage lcompartmeng'one end of said tube being contracted to resist the passage of a match head therethrough and being notched or slitted to exert ayielding pressure uponthe match head.
2. A match box having a storage compartment provided with a communicating tubular seat, and a dispensingor delivery tube revolubly mounted-1n said seat and provided with a longitudinal slot for communication with the storage compartment, one end of said tube being contracted to resist the passage of a match head therethrough, said tube consisting oi' a blank ofsheet metal to roll upon itself with its edges separated to form said slot and having a lateral tongue coiled to provide an operating knob.
V3. A match box having a storage compartment provided with a communicating tubu upon itself with the side Wall portions con-V tracted to form said seat, and end walls secured to the edges ofthe side walls and provided with bearings for said tube.
4. A match boX having a storage compartment provided with a communicating tubular seat, and a dispensing or delivery tube revolubly mounted in said seat and provided withL a longitudinal slot for communication With the storage compartment, one end of said tube being contracted to resist the passage of a match head therethrough and being notched or slitted to exert a yielding pressure upon the match head, the body portion of the box consisting of a blank of sheet metal doubled upon itself to form the bottom and side walls of which the free end edges are contracted to form said seat, end wall blanks being secured between the edges of said side Walls and having bearings for the delivery tube, and a bracket being attached to one of said end Wall blanks to receve` the vknob at one end of the delivery tu e. f
Inl testimony whereof he aiiixes his signature.
