Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL W. SMITH, OF DOOLEY COUNTY, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLows.
e Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 31,749, dated March 19,1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. SMITH, ot' the county of Dooley and State of Georgia, have inventedra new and Improved Plow and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure lis aside elevation of my invention, Fig. 2, an inverted plan ot same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsin the two figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a plow of simple construction which will admit of being readily adjusted to plow a furrow ot' greater or less depth, as may be required, and also admit of being readily manipulated or Inanaged by the attendant, and be of light or easy draft. The invention consists in a novel arrangement of a standard and brace, landside, arm, and block, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby the share may be set at a greater or less inclination and the landside adjusted in a horizontal position and in proper relation with the share at whatever degree of inclination the latter may have, the block being also adjustable, and serving to give au efticient bearing in the furrow to ease the land side and prevent the usual friction attending the operation ot' the same.
To enable those skilled inthe art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the beam ofthe plow; B B, the handles; O, a standard or foot, which may be formed of two parallel bars, a a, their upper ends being attached to the beam A by a bolt, b.
To the lower part ofthe standard C a share, D, is attached. This share may beofanysuitable form, and to the lower part ot'the standard C, at one side7 the front end of a landside,E, is secured by a bolt, c. The back end ofthe landside is secured by a bolt, d, to the lower end of an arm, F, the upper end of which is attached to the standard O by bolt e.
Gis a brace, the upper end of which is forked and secured to the beam A by a bolt,f. The lower end of this brace passes through the standards C, or between the bars a a thereof, andissecured atany desired pointbetweenthem by abolt,g. By this arrangementitwill beseen that a greater orless degree ofinclination may be given the standard O, and consequently the share D, by adjusting the bolt gof the brace G higher or lower through the brace, the latter being provided with a series of holes7 h, for suoli purpose; and in order to keep the landside E in a. horizontal positionat all points of adjustment of the standard and share the upper bolt, e, of the arm F is adjusted in any of a series of holes, i, in the upper part of the arm.
H is a wooden block, which approximates to a Vshape in its transverse section, and is directly behind and inline with the standard C. This block has a metal bar, j, attached to its upper surface, the front partot' the bar projecting in front ofthe block and bent in hook form, as shown at k. To the back part of the block a vertical bnr, bar is secured at its upper end to the back part of the beam A by a screw, ai, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The hook 7c catches over a bolt or cross-piece in the standard and connects the block H thereto. The block may be raised and lowered, so that it. may be adjusted to the required height. The block H serves as a support for the plow and prevents the landside cutting into the subsoil. The block insures a uniform depth of furrow, and also admits of theplow beingreadily turned and manipulated, generally bytilting the plow on the block H.
' l do not claim any the parts separately; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
Theadjustablel standard and brace B C, connected together and arranged in relation with and attached to the beam A, as shown, in 'connection with the landside E, block H, and adjustable arm F, all arranged for joint operation, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
DANL. w. svMrrH.
