Description
UNITED` STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. r. RUssELL, or MANLiUs, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FINGERS FOR HARVESTERS.
vSpecification forming partei' Letters Patent No. 3l,745, dated March 19, lSUl.
Improvement in Guard-Fingers for Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full and exact description thereof, rcf erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawings similar letters refer to like parts.
Figure l is a side elevation. Fig., 2isalongitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a plan vlew. f
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
The finger A is iliade of cast-iron, of a general forni similar to that of other fingers.
The cap B of the iingers is made of a sepa rate piece of metal, and has a tenon or toe, c, which fits into a corresponding inortise or opening in the linger; C, the steel faceplate. This plate alsohas a toe or tenon, b, similar to that of the cap B.
`c is the bolt or rivet which passes through cap B and plate C and secures them to the iinger A.
It will be seen that that part of the finger upon which the face-plate rests is slightly con-` cave.
The several parts being constructed as above, I first take the steel plate C, which is a thin plane plate, and layit upon the curved surface of the nger, at the same time inserting its toe or tenonb in the inortise in the projection at the front end of the `nger. I then in like manner place the cap B upon the plate C and insert its toe or tenon a in the saine mortise. I then drive up tightly or rivet the screw-bolt .0, which causes the cap B to press the plate G forcibly down upon the curved surface of the finger. This pressure upon the plate C must be sufficient to throw it out of plane and make it coincide with the concavity of the contiguous surface of the finger.. By this means the steel face-plate is well and easily secured to the finger without any fastening at its rear end excepting the square slot, and by reason of the concavity of this plate I secure a better shear cut.
I do not claim securing the steel cutterplate C in the front end of the finger by means of the mortise or cavity in which a tenon on the front end of the face-plate is inserted.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the elastic steel face-plate C with the concave face of the nger A by means of the cap B and the single bolt or screw c, whereby said plate is drawn down upon the finger in the manner described, for the purl poses set forth.
