TEMPORAR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed March 28, 1884.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, GEORGE V. NAUERTH, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders, 01' which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in those devices for the temporary holding of letters, bills, and other documents, which consist, essentially, of a base-board, (preferably inclosed on three sides by other boards that rise vertically from it and which constitute the front and two sides,) a clamp or clip so formed and connected with a spring as to press downward upon a pack of indexed leaves and insertedpapers placed upon said base, and a removable holder for retaining the index-leaves in their proper relative places when the clamp is lifted.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a temporary binder or letter-file embodying my invention, the clamp-bar and top or binding board being in their fully elevated position, portions of said bindingboard and of the index-leaves being broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the front portion of the same, the clamp bar being partly elevated. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are respectively detached representations of the clamp-bar, the top or binding board, and the index-leaves holder. Fig. 6 is an exterior view of the device with the clamp in its effect ive position, portions of the binding-board and index-leaves being broken away, and a modified form of holder being shown. Fig. 7 represents the said holder modification detached.

A is the floor or base, B the front, and O the sides, of an open-baeked drawer or tray intended to constitute one of a series of such drawers or trays, occupying a suitably-partitioned case or rack, so as to form a cabinet. In order that said drawer may slide easily in its appropriate compartment and for greater strength, its floor is made to occupy grooves c in said front and sides, thus elevating it from actual contact with the floor of its compartment.

Attached by screws D to the external face 50 of the front B is a plate, E, constituting a combined pull or handle, name-plate, and label- OF SAME PLACE.

holder, having in its top a slot, 6, for insertion of the proper label, and in its front an opening, e, to expose the inscription upon the label. Proj is a curved lip, c, that does duty as a pull or handle, with which to withdraw or return the drawer, and on which the designating name or title, such as Orders, may be stamped or inscribed. The opening 6' is preferably formed in and by the act of stamping out the curved lip or pull e.

F represents my clamp or clip proper, and consists of a piece of wire, preferably of steel, so bent and welded or soldered as to constitute the represented rectangular frame with rounded corners, and having at mid-length of one of its longer sides an out-turned portion or tongue, f. The proper angle of thetongue f relatively to the frame F is shown in Fig. 2, and is such as when said frame is partly lifted, as in Fig. 2, to present said tongue at right angles to the spring H, so as in this one position to press neither upward nor downward, but so as to press forcibly down- 7 5 ward in the position shown in Fig; 6, and upward in the position shown in Fig.1. The length of said frame is nearly equal to the distance between the sides G and its width, such as, in its effective position hereinafter So explained, to press upon the'contents of the drawer about midway between front and rear. That side of clamp which contains the tongue f is held fast to the inner wall of the front by a sheath or bearing, G, which is screwed rig- 8 idly to the said wall. In this condition the tongue f presses against a spring, H,,which, being firmly attached by its lower end to and occupying a recess in said wall, operates by its stress against the said tongue to hold the go clamp either to its downward position, shown in Fig. 6, to its upward or completely open position, as shown in Fig. 1, or to the intermediate position shown in Fig. 2. The spring H being wholly concealed within the 9 5 described recess, and the sheath G having the represented low rounded external contour and not occupying an appreciable portion of the drawer-opening, there is no projection to interfere with the insertion, inspection, or ICO withdrawal of the contents. upperpart of the sheath G, serves to confine the upper part of a holder, J, whose preferable form is shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 5, being that of a piece of steel wire having a straight middle portion, j, with two parallel rectanguat each end, the prongs or portions being pointed at their extremities in the manner shown, so as to be capable of being engaged in slots 7:, of binding-board K,

of wood or stiff tar-board, and in eyelet-holes Z, in a pack of leaves or sheets, L, which are inscribed near their edges remote from said eyelets with an alphabetical or other index, M, the said leaves being preferably stepped for that purpose, as shown.

Beneath the pack of index-leaves L the points of the holder occupy pits a in the base.

The holder being thus sprung into and grasped above by the lip g, and below by the pits a a, and engaged in the orifices of the bindingboard and index-leaves, as explained, its vertical portions j become stationary guide-rods, which prevent escape or displacement of the index-leaves, but permit of their being lifted at any indeX-mark for insertion, inspection,or removal of papers. The spring-pressure of the clamp,while sufficiently strong to prevent accidental disarrangement of the contents,is not so strong as to prevent the easy lifting of the index-leaves and binding-board in the manner stated.

The described combined label-holder, drawpull, and name-plate E may be stamped very economically out of sheet metal into the form shown, or it may be cast.

In Figs. 6 and 7 I show the holder J inverted and the ends thereof turned outward and upward to engage beneath lipped plates a on the front.

I am aware that combined drawer-pulls and label-holders are old, as are also spring-clips of temporary binders capable of being held to an open, a half-open, or a closed position, and

that said binders have been provided with rods for occupying eyelets in the contained papers, and I therefore do not make claim to such expedients, broadly considered.

I claim as new and of my invention 1. The combination, with a drawer or tray and the holder .T, of the front wall having a recess, a spring, H, secured at the bottom and extending into said recess, a rectangular clamp-frame or clip, F, having outturned portion f, and the sheath G, secured to the front wall forming a bearing for the frame or clip, and having a recess to receive the outturncd portion of the latter, as set forth.

2. The combination of a drawer or tray having pits a in the bottom, sheath G, having an inturned lip,g, and a holder, J, having straight middle portion, j, bent portions j,and prongs j, the prongs engaging the pits, as set forth.
