Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. SPUEE, of Franklin, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Neckties, of which the following is a description sufciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in which Figure lis a rear elevation of my improved necktie, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the same.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

My invention relates more especially to means for securing the tie to the neck of the wearer; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and` claimed, by which a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device for this purpose is produced than is now in ordinary use.

The nature and operation of the improve` ment will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.

In the drawings, A represent-s the body of the tie; B, the shield, and C C the iiaps, these parts being of the ordinary form and construction, except as hereinafter explained?.

The tie is secured to the neck of the wearer by means of an elastic cord, D, one end of which is attached to the body A, beneath the shield B, as shown at x, and the other passed beneath the opposite edge of the shield and through an eyelet, mi, disposed therein, its free end d being knotted, as shown at f, to prevent it from beingwithdrawn through an eyelet.

A depression or cavity, E, is formed in the shield B, to receive the knotted end of the cord, as best shown in Fig. 2, thereby preventing it from injuring or feeling uncomfortable to the wearer, and also causing the tie to set better, the knots when in the cavity being below the plane of the shield.

In the use of my improvement it Will be obvious that the tie may be readily attached to the neck by simply passing the cord over the head and permitting it to contract around the band of the collar, the contractile action of the cord keeping it at all times in proper position.

The tie is rendered adjustable by means of the knots f, more or less knots being employed, according to the size of the collar with which it is to be worn.

It will be obvious that the tie is well adapted for use with either turndown or standing collars, and that the cord may be readily applied to nearly any ordinary tie. I do not, therefore, confine myself to constructing the body of the tie or its flaps in the mannerI shown, or to the use of the shield B, or depression E, as the free end of the cord may pass through an eyelet or hole disposed in the bodyof the tie, and it may also be secured and rendered adjustable by other means than the knots, if preferred.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is l l. In a necktie, the shield B, provided with the depression E, for .receiving the knots f, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The improved necktie herein described, the same consisting of the body A provided with the flaps C C, the shield B, provided with the depression E and hole or eyelet m, and the elastic cotd D, provided with the knots f, constructed, combined, and arranged to operate substantially as described.
