ROLLER BLIND MOUNTINGS Filed Jan. 18, 1963 INV ENTOR D/M/T/Z/ GOLDE United States Patent O 88,967 Claims. (Cl. 16o-26) This invention relates to mountings for roller blinds such as roller blinds which may be lowered `as desired on the inside or outside over a window or door.
It is an object of the -invention to provide improved roller blind mountings and according to the invention such roller blind mounting comprises a frame disposed across a window or like opening to be shielded, Iapertures in the frame on the inside and outside of said opening, a rotary sheath, adapted Ifor housing the rolled up blind therein, and pivotally mounted about its own longitudinal axi-s within the frame, stop members or ribs on the sheath cooperating with abutments in the frame to limit said sheath movement between lirst `and second positions in which a guide member on the face end of the blind is aligned with a respective one of said apertures whereby the glide member may be drawn through one or other of said apertures to unroll the blind on the inside or outside of the opening, and means to pivot the sheath into one or other of the said limiting positions.
The opening may be closable such as by a window or a door and the uprights of the frame bounding the opening Iare provided on the inside and outside of the opening with guides for the guide member on the blind. Preferably the blind mounting frame is associated with these guides, extending along one or both sides of the opening on the inside and outside of a closure of the opening yand in register with the apertures in the haine, so that as the blind is unrolled the guide member will move in one or other of said ,guides inside or outside the said closure.
Moreover the pivoting means for the sheath preferably comprises ia bar or lrod having a pin at each end, one pin engaging in an opening in the sheath and the other in a slot in a lever operatively mounted on the interior of the opening at a level to enable an operator fto actuate it easily.
To enable the invention to be more clearly understood one embodiment in accordance therewith will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which FIG. l is `a vertical cross section through a roller blind mounting; `and FIG. 2 shows diagrammatically on a smaller scale a mechanism for operating the sheath oft the construction shown in FIG. l.
The mounting comprises a cylindrical sheath 1, housed in a top cross-piece 2 of a frame for a door or window or the like. The sheath is supported for rotational movement on axle 3 which is centrally mounted in said sheath. This sheath accommodates the rolled blind (not shown on the drawing) carryingat its end a weighting bar 4 longer than the sheath, so that it will not enter the sheath when the blind is rolled up in the sheath through an axially extending opening therein. The sheath supports on its outer surface stops in the form oflongitudinal ribs 5 and 5' which are adapted for striking a centnal `guide member 6 or one of two abutments 7 or 7' on the crosspiece 2. The `abutments 7, 7 ensure that Ithe sheath is closely t in the frame 2 while the same serve to limit the pivotal movement of the sheath between lirst and second limit positions. In these positions the blind may 3,163,24 vPatented Dec. 29, 1964 be wound and unwound respectively on either side of the opening 20 of the window or door. A slot 8 in the end pieces 9 of the sheath, enables the bar 4 to be housed within the outer contour of the sheath when the blind is rolled-up in the sheath. f
Uprights 10 on the window or door -frame include at one or both sides, guides 11 and 12, respectively on the interior and the exterior off the opening 20 ofthe window or door. The cent-ral guide member 6 and the guides 11, 12 cooperatively constitute guide means which dene the passage for the bar 4 of the blind on either sideV of the openingr20 of the window or door. Means is provided for pivoting the sheath on the frame between said rst and second positions and said means may for example be constituted as shown in FIG. 2 by a bar or rod 13 carry- Ving pins at its ends 14, one engaging in a hole lin the end of the sheath and the other engaging in an elongated slot 16 in one end portion of a lever 17 which is articulated in a support 18 iixed with respect to one upright 10. The lever 17 is controlled by a handle 19 at a position which enables the operator to actuate it conveniently. f
In moving the handle 19, the sheath may be rotated between said rst and second positions so that the bar 4 may be brought as desired into a position corresponding to either of the guides 11, 12 so that the blind can be pulled down on the inside or the outside oi the window or door opening. In either case the close t oi the moving parts within the interior of the cross piece 2 is obtained by the ribs 5 and 5'-, which are preferably of elastic material, and which engage abutments 7, 7 and central guide member 6 when the sheath reaches eachof said respective irst and second positions. i
I claim:
l. Roller blind apparatus for selectively blocking an opening, said apparatus comprising a fratrieV mounted adjacent said opening, a sheath supported -hom said trame for rotation about a central axis, said sheath being hollow and adapted for accommodating a rolled-up roller blind,
said sheath being provided with an axially extending openseparate inlets for the guides,` two projecting nibs on the sheath located to either side of the opening therein, and two abutments on the Afratrie located on opposite sides of the opening, said ribs Iand abutments being operatively positioned relative to one another and to the sides ofthe central `guide member to limit movement of lthe sheath between the first and second positions by causing in said first position to the sheath one of the ribs to be in contact with one of the abutments and the other of the ribs toV be in Contact with one'of the sides of the guide member while in the second position of the sheath the other of the ribs is in contact with the other of the abutments and thesaid one rib is in contact with the other of the sides of the guide member.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim l wherein said opening is bounded by lateral sides and the 'guide means includes la pair of guide elements supported on the lateral sides bounding the opening, a central 4guide member being provided `for each pair of guide elements.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim l .wherein the sides of the cent-ral guide member are inclined.
4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein said opening is a planar opening, said guide elements being located n other ofthe ends of the bar.

Claims (1)

1. ROLLER BLIND APPARATUS FOR SELECTIVELY BLOCKING AN OPENING, SAID APPARATUS COMPRISING A FRAME MOUNTED ADJACENT SAID OPENING, A SHEATH SUPPORTED FROM SAID FRAME FOR ROTATION ABOUT A CENTRAL AXIS, SAID SHEATH BEING HOLLOW AND ADAPTED FOR ACCOMMODATING A ROLLED-UP ROLLER BLIND, SAID SHEATH BEING PROVIDED WITH AN AXIALLY EXTENDING OPENING THROUGH WHICH THE ROLLER BLIND MAY PASS WHEN BEING ROLLED UP AND UNROLLED, GUIDE MEANS ADJACENT THE OPENING DEFINING FIRST AND SECOND GUIDES FOR THE PASSAGE OF THE ROLLER BLIND, MEANS OPERATIVELY CONNECTED TO THE SHEATH FOR ROTATING THE SAME BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND POSITIONS IN WHICH THE OPENING IN THE SHEATH IS IN COMMUNICATION WITH A RESPECTIVE GUIDE WHEREBY THE ROLLER BLIND MAY BE ASSOCIATED SELECTIVELY WITH EITHER OF THE GUIDES, SAID GUIDE MEANS INCLUDING A CENTRAL GUIDE MEMBER HAVING OPPOSITE SIDES AND BEING POSITIONED RELATIVE TO THE SHEATH TO DEFINE SEPARATE INLETS FOR THE GUIDES, TWO PROJECTING RIBS ON THE SHEATH LOCATED TO EITHER SIDE OF THE OPENING THEREIN, AND TWO ABUTMENTS ON THE FRAME LOCATED ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE OPENING, SAID RIBS AND ABUTMENTS BEING OPERATIVELY POSITIONED RELATIVE TO ONE ANOTHER AND TO THE SIDES OF THE CENTRAL GUIDE MEMBER TO LIMIT MOVEMENT OF THE SHEATH BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND POSITIONS BY CAUSING IN SAID FIRST POSITION TO THE SHEATH ONE OF THE RIBS TO BE IN CONTACT WITH ONE OF THE ABUTMENTS AND THE OTHER OF THE RIBS TO BE IN CONTACT WITH ONE OF THE SIDES OF THE GUIDE MEMBER WHILE IN THE SECOND POSITION OF THE SHEATH THE OTHER OF THE RIBS IS IN CONTACT WITH THE OTHER OF THE ABUTMENTS AND THE SAID ONE RIB IS IN CONTACT WITH THE OTHER OF THE SIDES OF THE GUIDE MEMBER.
