VENETIAN BLIND .-0rigina.l Filed Jan. 15', 1934 Patented Oct. 10, 1939 UNITED STATES 2,175,532 VENETIAN BLIND Peter B. Kuyper, Pella, Iowa, assignor to Roi-- screen Company, Pella, Iowa, a corporation of Iowa Originalapplication January 15, 1934, Serial No.
706,632. Divided and this application May '7,
1935, Serial No. 20,147
2 Claims.
One object of my invention is to provide a Venetian blind structure having the operating parts incorporating the structure being simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive from a manufacturing standpoint, .the present application being a division of my co-pending application Serial No. 706,632, filed January 15, 1934, Patent Number 2,058,159, October 20, 1936.
Another object is to provide a Venetian blind structure comprising a channel shaped, upwardly opening casing with the operating parts for the blind mounted and concealed therein, the structure being arranged for readily mounting and dismounting relative to a window frame.
Another object is to provide means for supporting the casing which in turn supports the Venetian blind, such means consisting of brackets into which the ends of the casing may be inserted, latch elements being provided to normally retain the ends within the brackets.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my de-, vice, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
I Figure 1 is a front elevation of a Venetian blind structure embodying my invention, parts thereof being broken away.
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view of the same:
and
Figure 3 is an'enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figurel.
(in the accompanying drawing, I have usedv the reference numeral) to indicate the side jamb of a window frame and I2 the head jamb thereof. I provide brackets A and a casing B. The casing is removably associated with the brackets and the brackets are supported by screws or other suitable means on the window frame.
The brackets A each comprise side flanges l4, bottom supporting flanges l6, outer limiting flanges I I and inner locking flanges 20.
The casing 13 comprises a bottom wall 22, an inner wall 24 and an outer wall 26. The casing B is provided with spring latches 28 adapted to snap behind the locking flanges 20 when the r 50 casing'B is inserted in supported position on the 65 I provide an act aating shaft 32 journalled in suitable brackets or bearings 33 and 36. Drums 34 are secured to the shaft 32 and a bevel gear 38 is also secured to the shaft at one end thereof. A transverse shaft 1 40 is journalled at one end of the casing B andhas a bevel gear 42 secured thereto within the casing. A pulley 44 is mounted on the shaft 40 and has a length of tilting rope or cord 46 extending thereover and depending therefrom. The cord may be secured to thepulley as at 46. It is thus obvious that the pulley can be oscillated in either direction and will consequently 58 or the like preventing slippage of the tapes 50.
with relation to the drums 34.
Slots 64 are provided in the bottom wall 22 of the casing B for the tapes in to extend through from the drums to the blind slats 52. The usual raising ropes 60 are provided, extending through slots 6| of the blind slats 52 and secured to the lower slats. These extend over pulleys 62, one of which is mounted between each tape ladder within th casing B below each drum 34. They then over a pulley 69 therein to depend from the casing B as indicated at 60a.
An opening 6| is provided in the wall 22 for the ropes to extend down through and a pulley 63 may be mounted at the front of the casing to prevent binding of the ropes when pulled by an operator during the raising of the blind.
A locking device 66 having a control cord 10 is provided, this device beingfully described in my Patent No. 1,957,272, of May 1, 1934.
I have provided a simple arrangement for tilting the blind slats by merely rotating the actuating shaft 32. The tapes 60 are thereby wound up on one side of the drums 34 and unwound from the other side during such operation. The casing B being channel shaped and opening upwardly provides an apparently closed casing when fitted against the head jamb l2. When the easing is removed, however, all operating parts are accessible for repair or replacement through the open top thereof.
The drums 34 being rotatably mounted will cause the slats of the blind to tilt as desiredwhen the drums are rotated in one direction or the other.
A convenient arrangement is provided for rotating the shaft 32 by means of the transverse end through a bracket 68 and finally shaft Ill and the tilting cord 4i depending therefrom. The latches 28 are readily operable to normally retain the casing in supported position or permit it to be removed from the brackets A i when desired for any reason. This and many other advantages arise from constructing a Venetian blind as I have disclosed.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my device without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. A head bar structure for Venetian blind operating mechanism comprising an elongated three sided casing forming a bottom and a pair of upwardly extending side walls of a height less than the width of the bottom, the ends of said casing being open and adapted tobe closed by supporting brackets when the casing is mounted thereon, supporting brackets for said ends of said casing having rearwardly facing shoulders and spring latches carried by said ends of. said casing and adapted for engagement with said shoulders when said casing is in supported position on said brackets.
2. A head bar structure for Venetian blind raising and tilting mechanism comprising a sheet of metal formed to provide a bottom wall and a pair of upwardly extending spaced side walls for forming a housing having its top side and its ends open, brackets for supporting said housing included as part of said head structure for closing the open ends of said housing, latches carried by said head bar structure and coactable with said brackets for normally retaining the head bar structure in position.
