Description

T: SJWSS v PAPER BOX. No. 315,454. Patented Apr; 7, 118185.
WITNESSES: VINVENTDRZ nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn nnnnnnnnnnn nnnnn c,
UNITE ST TES PATENT OFF THEODORE SPENCER WEsT, OF ALEXANDRIA, VA., ASSIGNOR 0F Quit-HALE TO WILLIAM W. LECTURE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUM BIAI T PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,454, dated April 7,1885. Application filed February 27, 1855. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, T. S. WEST, of Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The invention relatesto improvements in boxes for packing cooked food, referring particularly to boxes for fried oysters; and it consists in combining with such a box a detachable piece of pasteboard or other suitable material scored or partially severed transversely in such manner that when bent at the scores and inserted into the box it will be held in place by the materials contained in Said compartments and by the lid of the box.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a rectangular piece of pasteboard scored or partially severed transversely on one surface at two points and at another point on the opposite surface. Fig. 2 represents the same bent at right angles at the scores. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of a box for fried oysters with a scored piece of pasteboard lying within. Fig. 4 is the same with the piece of pasteboard bent so as to form three compartments, the latter being filled; and Fig. 5 is a modification in which the piece of pasteboard has but two scores, both on the same surface.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates a rectangular piece of pasteboard or othersuitable material of proper dimensions scored transversely on one surface at B and B, and on the opposite surface at O.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the surfaces are reversed,
as shown. D is a box for fried oysters or similar cooked food, and D is the lid thereof. It is evident that the pickles and the crackers usually packed with the oysters will by this device be separated therefrom and from each other, and will not be soiled by contact with the oysters. The pickles will also be separated from the oysters by the compartment holding the crackers, and will in one corner of the box.
not become heated by the oysters and ren dered uneatable, as is usually the case. It is also evident that in the modification shown in Fig. 5 the piece of pasteboard could be inserted with its scores against the side of the box, but the position shown is the most con venient and best adapted to serve the purpose. The compartmentsqmade by the paste board within the box may. vary slightly in size in respectto each other, as their sides may be inclined more or less from the perpendicular. as it adapts the box to hold varying quanti ties of the different materials. The distance from the upper end of the pastcboard piece to This is an important advantage, I
the score B should be about equal to the interior height of the box D, as shown in Fig. 4. The method of packing oysters is shown in Fig. 4. A piece, A, is furnished with each box, slightly narrower thanthe inside of the, latter.
The piece A is then The lid is removed and the pickles laidbent at its scores and inserted with its out wardly'bent end overthe pickles. The other materials are then put in place and thelid put The materials will hold the piece A in position, and the lid will prevent said piece I from falling out of the box.
Having thus described my invention, what i I hold as new, and desire to scene by Letters Patent, is- I 1. The combination, with the rectangular box D and lid D, of a rectangular piece, pref erably of pasteboard, slightly narrower than the inside width of the box, and so scored;
transversely as to form three compartments when bent at its scores and inserted into the box, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the been and In testimony that I claim. the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
