ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. NIOHOLS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,437, dated April 7, 1885.
Application filed July 25, 1884. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. NICHOLS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved toyinounted on wheels or runners; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
- Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
. Figure l is a perspective View of my new and improved toy, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
The body of the toy has the rockers or runners a a secured to it, and it is composed of the bottom b and curved'cover c in imitation of a locomotive, which cover is closed at its forward end, as shown at d, and open at its rear end, and extended to form the side pieces, 6 e, and seat-supports ff, on which the seatboard 9 is placed.
Around the seat-board g is placed the rail h, and immediately below and at the front edge of the seat-board g is placed between the seat-supports f f the cross-piece i,which braces the said seat'supports, as will be understood from Fig. 2.
At the sides of the cover 0 are secured the cylinders j j and rods 70 k, in imitation of the cylinders and piston-rods of a locomotive, and upon the curved cover 0 is secured the stack Z and bell-frame m, to which latter is attached the hell or, to the tongue 0 of which is attached l the string p, by which the bell may be struck by a child sitting upon the seat 9.
4Q Between the forward ends of the runners or p I rockers a a is secured the round q, to which the tongue 7* is attached, by which the toy may be drawn alongthe floor or gr0nnd,and through the runners or rockers a a are formed theopen- 5 ings s 8, through which the axles tt may be passed to receive wheels to upon their ends, so that the toy may be run upon the said wheels instead of upon the runners or rockers aa, if desired. 5o Constructed in this manner the toy is adaptit ed for use as asled or wagon, or as a rocking toy, and, being made in imitation of a locomo' tive, is very attractive to children.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, y a toy consisting of the runners a, the curved cover a, formed with the closed forward end,,6o d, the side pieces, e, the seat-supports f and seat 9, and the tongue r, secured between the forward ends of said runners, as set forth.
2. In a toy, the combination, with the runners 01, provided with the slots 8, of the axles t in the said slots, and the wheels at on the ends of the axle, substantially as herein shown Witnesses:
PAUL RADLorF, J OSEPH E. DYE.
