UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM JEFFERSON SANDERS, OF GILMER, TEXAS.
HEARTH GUARD OR SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,345, dated April 7, 1885.
Application filed May 2'2, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SANDERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gilmer, in the county of Upshur and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hearth. Guards or Shields; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specificatiom'and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hearth-guard, illustrating its applica tion to a fire-place. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the guard or shield removed from the fireplace; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through theplane indicated by the broken line 00 01:.
Similar letters of reference "indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to devices for protecting the hearth and jambs of fire-places; and it consists in the detailed construction of the sheet-metal guard or shield, which will be hereinafter-more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes the mantel, B the jambs or sides, and O the floor, of a fire-place which is fitted with my improved guard. The latter is made of any desired sheet metal, of suitable weight or thickness, in a single piece cut from a rectangular plate with straight sides, the said rect angular plate or blank being out to form an opening, D, opening up into a larger or wider opening, E. After this is done the plate is bent at the point where the openings D and E open up into each other, at right angles, forming the vertical part F and horizontal part G, the vertical or upright part having shoulders or projections H on opposite sides, formed by the increased width of the aperture E as com paredwith D. The bent plate F G is provided with a double series of nail-holes, I and J, along its outer and inner edges, for its permanent attachment, by screws or nails, to the sides, top, and floor of the fire-place. object of the shoulders or projecting parts H is to permit that part of the shield to be properly fitted to the grate and jambs, which The can readily be done, so as to' fit grates of variy oussiz es by bending the said parts H H more or less, and bycutting notchesKK in the projecting edges H H, of such shape and size that the edges will not interfere with the sides of the grate when bent around the corners of the jamb, which obviously could not be done if the inner sides of the opening D were flush or even with the sides of the larger horizonta opening, E.
Having thus described my inveution,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the i United Stat-es The herein-described hearth guard or shield,
the same consisting of a rectangular plate of sheet metal cut out to form the inside openings, D and E, of different size,.and bent at right angles at the point where the smaller WILLIAM JEFFERSON SANDERS.
