Description
(No Model.) G. W. PRENTICE.
BUTTON AND FASTENING.
.167. Patented Apr. 7, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. PRENTIOE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON AND FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,167, dated April 7, 1885.
Application filed January 9.0, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PRENTICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons and Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to buttons and fastenings; and it consists, essentially,'of a button having two depending shanks, each provided at its outer end with an enlarged projection, combined with a metallic washer provided with aslot or aperture and notches and indentations for receiving and retaining the enlarged ends of the shanks of the button when applied to fabric, the washer being in position on the under surface of the fabric, the button resting on the upper, the free ends of the shanks of the button projecting through the fabric into the washer, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved button complete, ready for attachment. Fig. 2 is a like view of a button-shank. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of my improved washer. Fig. 4 repre sents my improved button and washer as attached to fabric.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
In carrying out my invention I make use of the ordinary button-shank shown in Fig. 2 to constitute the holding or fastening portion of my improved button A. The inner or loop portion, a, of said button-shank is embedded in the head at of the button during the process of forming the same, leaving the shank 0 provided with enlarged projections 12, protruding from the lower surface or bottom of the button,
as fully shown in Fig. 1, to engage the inner portion of the washer B when attached to fab ric. The button thus formed constitutes the first part of my invention, the other part con-v sisting of a concavo-convex washer, B, having a slot or aperture, 0, extending inward from the outer edge of the washer. The inner end of said slot or aperture is provided with side notches, b, terminating in indentations d, the former being of the same shape and size of the shanks of the button, and the latter of the projections ofsaid shanks, as fully shown in Fig. 3.
In the operation of attaching my improved button the shanks of the same are passed through fabric from the outer side. The slot or aperture 0 of the washer is then sprung onto the shanks c of the button, over and above the enlarged projections b,until the said shanks reach the notches Z), into which they are sprung, the enlarged projections b engaging with the indentations d of the washer, thus securely locking the button and washer on. the fabric, as fully shown in Fig. 4:.
By means of myimprov'ement I am enabled to provide a button and fastening which can be applied to fabric in the quickest and most effectual manner, requiring no instrument or setting-tool, and when once attached to fabric is not easily disengaged. The button has a free movement on the fabric, and is admirably adapted for the purposecontemplated.
Having described my invention, I claim- A button consisting of a head having two depending shanks, each shank being provided at its outer end with an enlarged projection. and a washer having a slot extending inward from the outer edge, the inner end of said slot being provided on each side with a notch and indentation to engage the shanks and enlarged projections of the button when attached to fabric, combined and adapted for use substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I atl'ix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE \V. PBENTIOE.
