UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHERWOOD B. FERRIS, OF LAKEWOOD, NEWV JERSEY.
STOCKING OR GARMENT SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314.813, dated March 31, 1885.
Application filed November 7, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SHERWOOD B. FERRIS, of Lakewood, in the county of Ocean and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Im-- proved Stocking and Garment Supporter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to furnish a simple, convenient, and substantial device for use to support stockings, skirts, and other garments, and one that can be easily applied and adjusted, and which will hold securely. To that end the invention consists in the supporter constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4represent the supporter in front view, certain parts being slightly changed in the different figures; and Fig. 5 is a detail side View.
I use for the supporter around or flat cord, a, which may be in a single length and elastic, or a certain portion of its length may be non elastic. The single ended supporter shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4is the preferred construction; but two ends, as shown in Fig. 3, may be employed.
Upon the upper end of the cord is a slide-' loop, b, preferably made of metal and of the double form shown in Fig. 1, that allows the end of the cord to be doubled back, and the side of the loop is also apertured to allow of the cord end being strung through, thereby holding the cord securely and leaving an exposed portion that can be readily drawn out for adjustment of the length of the supporter.
Upon the lower end of the cord is a slideloop, 0, that is made of flexible material, so as not to chafe the wearer, and I prefer to make this loop triple to insure a stronger fastening.
The extreme end of the cord or is sewed securely in one pocket of the slide, and passes loosely through the other pocket, so as to form a loop, d, that can be drawn up by moving the slide. To the slide-loop c a button, 6, is attached by a flexible connection, f. In Fig. 1 this connection is by a piece of tape, and in Figs. 2 and 4 the button is on the end of cord a, which is left projecting for that purpose.
In using the supporter the stocking or gar- (No model.)
ment'is gathered upon the button 6, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, and the loop d then put over the button and drawn tightly, thus giving a secure hold. The upper end of thesupporter is caught by its loop on a button sewed to the waist or other garment. In this manner the supporter is securely held, and any strain tends to draw the loop tighter.
When preferred, the connection of theupper end to a button may be made by a safetypin, 1', which is hung on the loop of cord a. This pin 2' is made with a side loop or projection, k, which, by passing upon the buttonshank, allows the pin to be readily put in place on the button.
In Fig. 1 the upper slide-loop, b, is shown as made of flexible material, and in Fig. 4 the lower slide, 0, is of metal. In Fig. 3 the end of cord a is made more secure by passing through between the two pockets of the loop. I do not limit myself with respect to these or other details of construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The stocking and garment supporter consisting of a cord, at, provided with an adjustable loop at its upper end, and at its lower end with a slide, 0, and a button attached to the slide by a flexible connection, substantially as described.
2. In a stocking-supporter, the combination of slide 0, made of flexible material, with the cord a and button e, substantially as described.
3. In a stocking-supporter, the open-ended loop b, having a vertical central passage fora doubled cord and two perforations in one of its vertical sides and at right angles to the central passage, said perforations being one above the other with aportion of the material of the loop between them to form a crosspiece, whereby the loop may be slid upon a looped cord in the manner and for the purpose described.
4. The combination of button a and flexible connection f with cord aand slide-loop a, substantially as described.
