Berk & Company Limited, London, England, a British company Filed Aug. 9, 1961, Ser. No. 130,292 Claims priority application Great Britain Feb. 1, 1961 1 Claim. (Cl. 239-79) This invention relates to nozzles for flame spraying pistols.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved such nozzle which can be used in the flame spraying of powders with a substantially greater through-put of powder than has been possible hitherto. Accordingly, the invention provides a nozzle comprising a barrel through which extends a plurality of longitudinal passages for powder and a plurality of longitudinal passages for gas, all the passages having outlet openings which are arranged atone end of the barrel so that the openings of the gas passages alternate with the openings of the powder passages.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings of which:
FIGURE 1 is a view of the inlet end of a nozzle for a pistol intended for the flame spraying of powders,
FIGURE 2 is a view of the outlet end of the nozzle,
FIGURE 3 is a section on line A-A of FIGURE 2, and
FIGURE 4 is a section on line B--B of FIGURE 2.
The nozzle illustrated comprises a substantially cylindrical barrel 1 with a cylindrical portion 2 of smaller diameter at one end, which is the inlet end of the nozzle. This smaller portion is externally screw-threaded to enable the nozzle to be screwed in the pistol (not shown).
Two groups of passages 3, 4 extend longitudinally through the barrel 1 for the purpose of conveying powder or gas, there being conveniently four passages in one group for the gas and four in the other group for the powder.
The inlet ends of the powder passages 3 are at the end of the smaller cylindrical portion 2. These passages 3 extend through the smaller cylindrical portion parallel with the axis of the barrel. On entering the larger por- Ice tion of the barrel, they are, as shown in FIGURE 4, first inclined outwards and then run through the barrel parallel with its axis until they near the outlet when they are inclined towards the axis of the barrel.
The inlet ends of the gas passages 4 are at the shoulder 5 formed at the end of the larger portion of the barrel adjacent the smaller portion. These passages extend through barrel parallel with its axis until they near the outlet end when they are inclined toward the axis of the barrel (see FIGURE 3).
If desired, the gas can be supplied to the inlet ends of the passages opening at the end of the smaller portion and the powder to the inlet ends of the passages opening at the shoulder.
The outlet ends of the gas passages and the powder passages are all disposed at the same distance from the axis of the barrel and are so arranged that the outlet ends of the gas passages alternate with those of the powder passages.
The external surface of the barrel can be suitably slotted to permit air cooling of the nozzle. For example, a plurality of longitudinal slots can be spaced around the barrel near the outlet end.
What I claim is:
A nozzle for a pistol for the flame spraying of powders comprising a cylindrical barrel having a main portion tapered at one end and a cylindrical portion of reduced diameter at the other end and first and second groups of passages extending longitudinally through said barrel, each passage in said first group extending through said reduced cylindrical portion with the axis thereof and then being inclined outwards on entering said main portion, after which it runs parallel to the axis of the barrel until being inclined towards said axis at said tapered end and each passage in said second group extending Within said main portion parallel with the said axis and being inclined towards said axis at said tapered end, and said passages in said first group alternating with said passages in said second group.
