EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,406, dated March 3, 1885.
Application filed January 8, 1884.
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOYAL M. DODDRIDGE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Stanton, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding extension-tables, having for its object the provision of a table which can be quickly and readily adjusted; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved extension-table. Upon the right of this figure the bracket E projects inside the leg, and the top piece, a is rigid with the leg. In either case the sections fold within the bracket. Fig. 2 is a similanview of a part of the table, with one section of the tabletop folded. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. .4 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the table-top, and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detail views.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate. like parts, A represents the top composed of sections a, connected together by means of hinges a on their under surfaces, and provided near their outer edges with grooves o the function of which will be hereinafter described. The top has a beveled section, a rigidly secured to brackets, hereinafter described, and hinged leaves a. The middle one of the sections a is rigidly secured to the section b of the side rails, B, the remaining sections, I), being hinged together, and of the same width as the respective top sections which they support. The outer sections of the side rails, B, are hinged to the legs D, having the end rails, (3. Each table-leg is provided at its top with a lug, d, which, when the table is adjusted, moves in the grooves a 0f the table-top.
Brackets E E, constructed as presently de- (No model.)
scribed, are respectively secured to the tablelegs, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. These brackets serve to receive the sections of the table-top when it is desired to shorten up the top thereof. WVhen the brackets extend ontwardly, as at E, the section ad, which is preferably beveled, is rigidly secured to the upper ends thereof, and when it is desired to reduce that end of the table the legs are pressed inwardly, allowing the hinged sections to drop after turning the leaf -support to one side. The legs to which the inwardly projecting brackets E are secured have a rigid top section having a hinged leaf. It will be observed that when inwardly-projecting brackets alone are used the rigid sections at each end are secured to the top of the table-legs, and that. when outwardly-proj ecting brackets are used the rigid sections are secured to the upper end of the brackets. Each bracket is cast with horizontal and vertical arms 6 e, at right angles to each other, the horizontal arm 6 having a vertical flange or lug, e, and the vertical arm 6 having a horizontal flange or lug, e 7 5 said flanges being provided with apertures for the passage of the screws or boltswhich secure the bracket to the table-top. The bracket is further provided with lug 6, upon which rests the strip or-board F, having a recess to receive a pivoted leaf-support, G.
It will be seen that by my construction on or more of the hinged sections composing the table top can be conveniently and expeditiously folded into a receptacle formed by two brackets secured to the legs of the table and the top thereof, as described.
Modifications in details of construction and form and proportion of parts can be made without departing from the principle or sacrio ficing the advantages of my invention-as, for instance, the arms of the brackets may be curved, or the angle of the arms changed, or the lugs d made with straight sides instead of dovetailed. I would therefore have it under- 5 stood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
The invention which is relied on in this application is shown in the left of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2, in which a projection in the table-legs hinged sides, the legs D d, brackets E, and operates in the groove a of the top, and in section a, rigid with the bracket and having which the bracket is 011 the outer side of the inclined side, as set forth. legs, the other construction being a modifica- S. The combination, with an extension-table 5 tion. having hinged top and sides, of the bracket E, 20
Having thus fully described my invention, having securing lugs or plates 0 and e and lug what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters 6', combined with the legs D, top section, a, Patent, is- 7 leaf a, and support G, as and for the purposes 1. The combination of an extension-table set forth. 1o having hinged top and sides, the said top A In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in 2 5 having its central section rigid with the central presence of two witnesses.
side section, and having grooves, as (6 with the LOYAL M. DODDRIDGE. legs D, having projections d, and with brackets Witnesses: E, as and for the purposes set forth. S. FULLER,
I 5 2. In combination with the hinged top and T. N. STEVENS.
