Description

Filed Nov. 50, 1961 25 inventor:
Patrick J. Moreno United States Patent 3,131,698 GIRDLE TYPE UNDERGARMENT Patrick J. Morano, Newark, NJ., assignor to Glamorise Foundations, Inc., New York, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed Nov. 30, 1961, Ser. No. 156,032 1 Claim. (Cl. 128-523) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in torso encircling and molding undergarments such as girdles, panty girdles, corsets, corselets, and the like, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a garment of this type which is structurally adapted to snugly embrace and countour fit the gluteal region and thereby pronounce the natural shape of the wears buttocks.
While conventional girdle type undergarments are fashioned to resiliently support and slenderize the front of the abdomen and the hips, the back portion thereof merely extends across the buttocks, spanning in a virtually flat plane the valley-like chasm which extends downwardly between the buttocks to upper back regions of the thighs. As a result, the gluteal region assumes a flat board effect which not only detracts from the aesthetic appearance of natural body curvatures, but what is more, the flat back portion of the garment has a marked tendency to curl, roll or ride upwardly, thus subjecting the garment to undue strain and the wearer to undue discomfort. These disadvantages of conventional garments are eliminated by the present invention wherein the gluteal region of the garment is contour fitted to the corresponding region of the body so that the garment faithfully follows the natural curvature of the buttocks, smoothly flowing into the valley-like chasm therebetween and embracingly reaching below the lower buttock portions at the upper back regions of the thighs. Thus, the garment in accordance with the invention not only pronounces the aesthetic appearance of the natural buttock contour in what may be regarded as a tight skin fitting manner, but embracement of the lower buttock portions by the garment prevents the garment from curling or riding up at the back.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts, and wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view, taken from the rear and one side, showing a garment embodying the invention on the body of a wearer;
FIGURE 2 is a rear elevational view of the garment per se in a flat form; and
FIGURE 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the garment in position on a wearer's body illustrated by dotted lines, this view being taken substantially centrally from front to back of the body through the crotch.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the general reference numeral designates a torso encircling and molding undergarment exemplified by a girdle, although it is to be understood that the teachings of the invention are applicable to girdles, panty girdles, corsets, corselets and other foundation garments of the abdomen encircling and molding type, and that all refer- 3,131,698 Patented May 5, 1964 ice ences to a girdle herein are to be construed broadly in terms of such garments.
The girdle 10 has a front portion 11 and side portions 12 of a conventional construction, and the essence of novelty in the invention resides in the construction of the back girdle portion 13 and specifically the gluteal region 14 thereof. This involves the provision of a contoured panel of material which constitutes the back portion 13 and is stitched to the side portions 12 as indicated at 15. The panel, indicated at 16 has convex side edges 17 which are upwardly convergent to some extent, convex lower edge portions 18 which form continuations of the side edges 17, and a concave lower edge portion 19 which connects the lower edge portions 18, as is clearly shown in FIGURE 2. The material of the panel 16 is preferably elastic and stretchable in the vertical direction as shown by the arrows 20. The panel 16 is contoured with sufficient fullness so that when the garment is applied to the body, the gluteal region 14 of the panel fits in a skin tight manner the wearers buttocks and faithfully follows the natural curvature of the buttocks, also fitting into the valley-like chasm therebetween so as to produce a corresponding valley-like chasm in the garment as indicated at 21. The lower edge portions 18 of the panel 16 extend below or underlie the lower portions of the buttocks and, by snugly embracing the same, prevent the garment from curling or riding up at the back. The elasticity of the panel 16 assures a smooth, tight skin fitting of the panel to the buttocks with aesthetic conformity to the natural body contours, aswill be readily apparent from FIGURE 1.
The side portions 12 are connected together at the lower edge of the back of the girdle with an integral, transversely elongated member 22 to which the lower edges 18, 19 of the panel 16 are stitched. The member 22, being of the same material as the side portions 12, thus afi'ords anchorage for the lower edges 18, 19 of the panel and, by underlying the lower portions of the buttocks at the back upper regions of the thighs, the member 22 effectively assists in preventing curling or riding up of the lower back portion of the girdle.
The material of the front portion 11, side portions 12 and the member 22 preferably is a two-way stretch elastic material, as indicated by the arrows 23 in FIG- URE 3.
If desired, a circumferentially yieldable elastic band 24 may be provided at the upper edge of the girdle, and conventional hose suspenders may be employed, as indicated at 25.
While in the foregoing there has been described and shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, various modifications may become apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates. Accordingly, it is not desired to limit the invention to this disclosure and various modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
In an abdomen encircling and molding undergarment, the combination of side sections formed from two-way stretch elastic material yieldable in vertical and horizontal directions, a unitary back panel disposed between said side sections and formed from one-way stretch material yieldable in the vertical direction only, said back panel being adapted to snugly engage and conform to the natural configuration of the gluteal region of a wearer and having a straight top edge, downwardly divergent side edges extending from the ends of said top edge and stitched to rear edges of said side sections, said side edges having downwardly and inwardly curved lower regions adapted to underlie the buttocks, and an upwardly arched centrally disposed lower edge connecting together the inner ends of the curved lower regions of said side edges in a reversely curved manner, and a transversely extending lower member formed integrally with and connecting together said side sections below said References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 2,522,510 Fridolph Sept. 19, 1950 2,565,866 Loftus et a1.
