Description
April 28, 1964 E. M. JOHN MANICURING DEVICE Filed June 30, 1961 FIG.6
United States Patent M 3,136,433 MANICURING DEVICE Eve M. John, Chicago, Ill. (4705 Rose St., Schiller Park, 111.) Filed June 30, 1961, Ser. No. 121,238 1 Claim. (Cl. 15105) My invention relates to a manicuring device.
More particularly my invention has to do with a device for applying nail polish material to and for removing excess nail polish material from the finger nails.
A particular object of the invention is to provide such a device which will be simple in structure, economical in manufacture and highly efiicient in use.
Ancillary to the above stated object is the provision in a manicuring device for the purpose hereinafter more fully set forth for projecting an applicator element or finger a predetermined distance from one end of the applicator and for latching such element in such predetermined position.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
FIG. 1 is an elevational view of the invention.
HG. 2 is a part sectional elevational view of an adapter embodied in the invention.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detailed view of the outer end of the adapter shown in FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a sectional detailed View of an applicator holder embodied in the invention.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary elevational view of the holder shown in FIG. 4 with an applicator mounted therein, and
FIG. 6 is a top end view of the invention.
The several objects of my invention are preferably accomplished by the preferred form of construction shown in the accompanying drawings. In this connection 5 indicates a container within which nail polish, or other material to be applied to the finger nail, is contained. The container 5 has a removable cap 4 which preferably is threaded upon the neck of the container 5. The cap 4 carries a brush element 6 which, when the cap is in position upon the container 5, projects into the latter. By means of this brush 6 the material within the container 5 may be applied to the finger nail.
Connected to the cap 4 is an adapter 3 which may be of any preferred form and formed of such material as will best serve the purpose. In the present instance the outer end portion of the adapter 3 is provided with a socket or bore 7 opening at a tapered end 1' of the adapter.
The adapter has provided therein a longitudinally extending slot 2 which extends the full length of the socket or bore 7. Spaced in a longitudinal direction with respect to the adapter 3 and opening into the slot 2 are notches 2.
A holder 8 is shown in FIG. 4. This holder provides a hollow end portion 14 which receives an end portion of an applicator finger 1. The holder 8 is provided with resilient tongues 11 which yieldably grip the inserted end of the applicator finger 1 to removably hold the finger in position in the holder 8. The holder is provided with a finger piece 9 by means of which the holder may be 3,130,433 Patented Apr. 28, 1964 moved longitudinally within the socket 7 and latched in a predetermined position by rotating the holder 8 to dispose the finger piece 9 in an adjacent notch of the notches 2'.
The applicator finger 1 may be formed of felt or other material suitable for the purpose. Preferably the exposed end of the applicator finger 1 is tapered as shown. As shown in the drawing (FIGS. 2 and 3), the diameter of the socket 7 is larger than the diameter of that portion of the socket extending through the tapered end portion 1 of the adaptor 3 and is slightly larger than the diameter of the applicator finger 1. By this construction, frictional resistance to the movement of the applicator finger 1 is reduced to a minimum while leaving a sufiicient bearing surface between the applicator finger '1 and the tapered end portion 1' of the adaptor 3 to properly guide projection of the applicator finger 1 outwardly of the adaptor 3.
In practice the finger nail material is applied to the finger nail by unscrewing the cap 4 to remove the brush 4 carrying a quantity of the material for application to the finger nail. The adapter for smoothing out and removing excess finger nail material when used may be removed from the cap 4 or it may remain attached to the cap 4 if desired.
The applicator finger is projected a predetermined distance outwardly from its socket disposing the tapered end portion which is to be brought into contact with the finger nail for spreading and removing excess material. After the material has been applied and the excess thereof removed, the applicator finger may be projected the distance between adjacent notches 2' and then trimmed to remove the end portion of the finger which has been previously used. This arrangement prevents the finger end from becoming hardened by the drying process of the finger nail material.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I provide a manicuring device which will be highly efficient in use and one, because of its simplicity of construction, may be manufactured at an economical cost.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A finger nail polish applicator and excess polish remover comprising:
(a) an elongated member removably carried by a cap of a nail polish container,
(12) said member having a taper on one end and provided with a hollow cylindrical bore with said bore having a smaller diameter as it extends through the tapered end of said member,
(0) said member having a longitudinally extending slot formed in the side thereof in open communication with said bore,
(d) said member at predetermined points in the direction of its length having notches opening into said slot,
(e) a cup-shaped holder mounted in said bore for notches so as to position said holder relative to the 5 tapered end of said member, and a (g) disposable applicator finger carried in said holder within said bore and movable therewith so as to project a portion thereof a predetermined distance out of the tapered end of said member slot, and (h) holding tongues provided by said holder and extending inwardly of and in the direction of the base 4 of said holder for retaining said applicator finger in said holder as it is moved throughout said bore.
