BOOT AND SHOE CLEANER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,764, slated February 24, 1885.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that we, SoLoMoN J. RHOADS and MORTON G. RHOADS, both citizens of the United States, residing at Metropolis, in the county of Massac and- State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Cleaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. This invention has relation to improvements in devices for cleaning shoes; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the various parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained.

The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate our-invention, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of our device, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the cleaner, which is designed to remove mud, dirt, &c., from the boot or shoe; and the same consists of a cast head, a, having a ferrule or socket, b, to receive one end of a handle, 0, which may be of any desired length. This head a is cast in skeleton form, and is provided on one of its sides with a transverse rib or projection, (Z, and on the opposite side thereto is a longitudinal rib, d, which ribs serve as scrapers,

and the same with the head and ferrule or socket are cast in one piece. The head aforesaid is bifurcated, as at e, to receive the straw f, or other suitable material,which is used for brushing the dirt from the shoes.

B represents a block or cap, which is cast with a rib or scraper, g, and shoulders h h, as

well as a transverse groove or channel, c, which latter corresponds in size. and shape with the bifurcation in the head aforesaid, and the same is provided with screw-holes k k, to receive screws Z Z, that pass through perforations m m in the head, as shown in the drawings, whereby said cap and head are secured to one another, and by means of which the straw is firmly secured to the cleaner.

It will be observed that when the straw becomes worn and worthless from use the cap or block can be removed and another lot of material can be substituted therefor.

A shoe wiper or cleaner constructed as herein shown is durable, and at the same time cheap to manufacture.

Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The hereinde scribed shoe-cleaner, consisting of the bifurcated head a, cast in skeleton form, and provided with the longitudinal scraper cZ, transverse scraper d, socket b to receive the handle 0, the cap or block B, having the transverse groove or channel 6, scraper g, and screw-threaded perforations 7c 70, to receive the screws Z Z, by means of which the same is secured to the head, said bifurcated head adapted to receive the straw f, as shown, described, and for the purpose specified.
