IlNHALER.
SFECIEICATION ormng part of Letters Patent No. 311,776, dated February 31, 1885.
Application filed August 2, 1884.
To LZZ whom it may concer/2,:
Be it known that I, ERNEST Nrrz, of the city ot' New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Inhaler,of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new inhaler for protecting physicians and others against deleterious gases and cxhalations from sick per- 1o sons. It consists in the details of construction,
all as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying; drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved inhaler. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof on the line 0o x, Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line y y, Fig. 4, and Fig. 4, a longitudinal section on the line z c, Fig. 8. The inhaler is composed, essentially, of two parts--a case, A, and a slide, B. The ease A 2c is a rectangular` box, of sheetr metal or other material, open at one end and partially closed at its other end bya perforated concave plate, a, that is extended to form a concave rim, b, which surrounds case A, similar to a hat-rim.
The case A is provided with a covering, c, of
silk or other material, which is stitched to the open end ot' the case through holes d,as shown.
The covering extends also around the edge of rim b, and is there doubled up into a fold for the reception of wadding, thus forming a cushion, e, which bears against the face of the wearer. f is a strap attached to rim b with both ends, and adapted to be passed around'the head to hold the device in place.
The slide B is of a size to iit within case A.
It is in construction similar to a bureau-drawer,
(No modl) open at the top and closed at the bottom and sides. Its front and rear a'. erespectively coinposed of perforated plates g and h.. The front plate, g, has a tlange, i, which surrounds it 4o and fits over edge of ease A and its covering c to form a close joint. rIhe back plate, h, is bent first forward and then upward, Fig. 3, and is soldered tothe bottom of slide B at its lower portion, k, while its upward extension, m, forms a partition within the slide to divide it intoa front and rear chamber.
In use sponge or any other porous substance is placed within the front chamber, while cotton saturated with a disinfectant is placed within the rear chamber. The slide is then inserted into the case A and the latter sccured over the mouth by strap f. In this way the mouthis properly protected from deleterious gases.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination, in an inhaler, with the case having a perforated face-plate provided with a rim, of a slide having front and rear perforated plates adapted to fit the case, sub- 6o stantially as described.
2. The combination, in an inhaler, with the case having aperforated faceplate and a projecting rim and covering extended. around the same, of a slide having perforated front and 65 rear pieces, and provided with flanges adapt ed to fit over the edge of the case, substan tially as described.
