FROG-BASKET FOR FlSHERM EN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,65 5, dated August 28, 1900.
Serial No. 20,508. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Beitknown thatI, BENJAMIN F. MOCURDY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Frog-Baskets for Fishermen, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bait-carriers for fishermen.
The object of my invention is to provide a frog-basket of a simple and cheap construction in which live frogs may be carried or shipped without loss or injury and which will enable the fisherman to conveniently and quickly insert or remove a single frog from the basket without possibility or danger of others escaping.
With this object in View my invention consists in a basket having a thin cloth top, preferably of thin sheet muslin, composed of two sections or parts overlapping each other at their meeting edges and provided each at said meeting edges with an elastic band or strip to permit the fisherman to conveniently insert his hand between the overlapping elastic edges of the two parts of the cloth top, while keeping the same effectually closed against the escape of the frogs or other live bait in the basket.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,.Figure 1 is a perspective View of a f rog-basket embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In said drawings, A represents the body of a basket, the same being preferably formed of thin wood splints.
B B are the two parts or sections of the thin flexible porous cloth top, the marginal edges 1) of which overlap and are secured to the sides of the basket, at the top portions there of, by waterproof glue. A strip of tape O, surrounding the basket, near the top thereof, and glued over the marginal edges 1) of the cloth top, additionally secures the cloth top to the basket and gives a neat and finished appearance to the basket. The meeting edges Z2 b of the two parts of the cloth top B B. overlap each other and are each furnished with an elastic D, preferably an elastic strip, around which the fabric of the cloth top is folded at the meeting edges and to which the same is secured by stitching b The elastics D D are each preferably bands and extend around the bottom of the basket, so as to secu rely hold the overlapping meeting edges of the two parts of the cloth top taut together, and thus prevent the possibility of the live frogs or other live bait escaping at the overlapping meeting edges of the cloth top. The meshes of the thin cloth top and interstices of the splints of which the basket is made afford ample ventilation, so that the frogs may be shipped several hundred miles without inj ury. The tape band C, which surrounds the basket, is secured thereto by waterproof glue. The part or section B of the cloth top should cover about two-thirds of the length of the basket and the part B about one-third the length thereof, as this gives greater convenience for the insertion of the hand to put in or take out the frogs.
F is the handle of the basket.
I claim- 1. A fishermans frog or bait basket, comprising a body and a thin, flexible, porous cloth top, secured thereto and made in two parts or sections, the meeting edges of which overlap each other, said overlapping meeting edges of said sections being provided with elasties extending across the top of the basket to form anormally-closed opening through which the hand may be inserted, substantially as specified.
2. The frog or bait basket, comprising in combination a body A, and a two-part thin, flexible, porous cloth top 13, B, the marginal edges 1) of which are secured to the sides of the basket, and the meeting edges b b of which overlap each other and are furnished with elastic bands D D extending around the basket and across the top thereof, substantially as specified.
3. The frog or bait basket, comprising in combination a body A, and a two-part thin, flexible, porous cloth top B, B, the marginal edges 1) of which are secured to the sides of the basket, and the meeting edges bb of which overlap each other and are furnished with elastic bands D D extending around the basket and across the top thereof, and a tape band C surrounding the basket and glued edges of the cloth top furnished with elasover the marginal edges 1) of said cloth top, ties to hold the same closed, substantially as substantially as specified. specified.
4:. A fishermans frog or bait basket, pro- 1 BENJAMIN F. MCCURDY. 5 Vicled with a thin, porous cloth top, having YVitnesses:
an opening extending across the same, said L. E. OURTIs,
opening consisting of overlapping meeting EDW. SEVARTS.
