This object is achieved by the provision of the instant receptacle which embodies in its construction a container having an open end equipped with a closure assuming the form of a pair of resilient sheets, the latter having overlapped edge portions which may be readily spread apart by simply inserting a band therebetween, but which, by virtue of their resiliency, tend to enclose or embrace the hand in such manner as to prevent the escape of bait.

Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for retaining the resilient sheet in a stretched condition on the open end of the container, while a further feature resides in the provision of unique means for carrying the container as a whole.

Some of the advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention;

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, this being taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 3, and;

Figure 3 is a horizontal cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3-3 in Figure 2.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a bait receptacle designated generally by the reference character N, the same embodying in its construction a substantially cylindrical, foraminous container l2 having open ends and provided intermediate the ends thereof with a. partition it which is secured to the foraminous lateral wall of the container by a plurality of angulated lugs or brackets 16, as will be clearly apparent.

As is best shown in Figure 2, the end portions of the foraminous container l2 are provided in the interior thereof with annular reinforcing bands 2d, while each of the closures 22 consists of a pair of resilient sheets 26, 2B, outer marginal edge portions of which are turned over the band 2% at the adjacent end portion of the container [2, to which they are secured by suitable annular clamps 36 provided with clamping screws 32. By virtue of this arrangement the

26, 2% are maintained in a stretched condition on the open end of the container, and it is to be noted that inner edge portions of the two sheets are overlapped as indicated at 34, so as to provide a closure for the associated compartment of the container. However, by simply inserting a hand between the overlapped edge portions a l, access may be had to the bait in the compartment, while the overlapped edge portions, although partly separated, will tend to embrace and frictionally engage the hand by Virtue of their inherent resiliency, thus preventing the bait from escaping.

If desired, short straps or strips 36 may be positioned against the inner surfaces of the clamps 36 so as to bridge the space spanned by the clamping screws 32 and thereby prevent the resilient sheet (24 or 26) from wrinkling while the clamp is applied thereto.

However, it is to be noted that the clamps 30 may be readily removed from the container l2 to facilitate expeditious replacement of the sheets 25, 28 when so desired.

To facilitate convenient carrying of the entire receptacle, a flexible carrying element such as a cable or chain 38 may be suitably connected at one end thereof to the clamping screw 32 of one of the clamps 3B, the remaining end of this element being provided with a clasp 4B of any conventional type, which may be separably engaged with an eye 42 provided on the container I2 at a point which is diametrically opposite from the point of attachment of the element 38 to the container, thus facilitating carrying of the container in a substantially upright position.

However, if so desired, the clasp it may be disengaged from the eye Q2 and connected to the clamping screw 3?. of the second clam as as is indicated by the phantom line id, whereby the entire receptacle may be carried in a substantially horizontal position, either by hand or over the shoulder.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the claimed as new is:

In a bait receptacle having a wall portion of greater length than width and having open ends and openable closures for said ends, clamps surrounding said ends to maintain said closures on said Wall portion, said clamps having lugs extending outwardly from said wall portion in the same direction and being in substantial alignment, a bail securing element on said wall portion on the side opposite thereof from said lugs,

invention, what is 4 and a bail pivotally secured to a, clamp portion at the end of the wall portion of the receptacle adjacent the bail securing element, a detachable fastener secured to the opposite end of the bail, said fastener in one position thereof being adapted to be secured to the lugs of the other clamp, whereby in one position of the bail the receptacle may be held with its longitudinal axis vertical and in another position thereof with its longitudinal axis horizontal.
