HANDLE FOR MILLSTONE PICKS. No. 311,476. Patented Feb.- 3, 1885.
tlrrrrnn Srarns Parent tries,
HERBERT I. DIGKSON, OF WEST LIMA, IVISCONSIN.
HANDLE roawutterons-eicas.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,476, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed October 24, 1884. (No model.) A
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, I'IERBER'I P. DIGKSON, of \Vest Lima, in the county of Itichland and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Millstone-Picks; and I do hereby declare that the follpwing is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved and novel construction of millstone-picks, whereby the handle and pickingblade are held securely within an inclosing head or lrame which is capable of being readily taken apart or put together in the shortest and best possible manner; and my improvements consist, essentially, in the details of construction and general arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my complete invention, and Fi 2 a detail front View of the head or frame.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent "the two parts or sections of the head or frame which holds the picking-blade B and the handle O, the lower part or section being enlarged and tapering, while the upper part or section, A, is a rectangular fiat piece, as shown. Through the center of the lower section, A, is provided a tapering hole or opening, a, hav ing its largest diameter at the upper part of said section, and tapering from thence to the bottom of the'same, in which the one end of the handle Ghaving a corresponding shape is adapted to fit snugly. The upper face of the lower section, A, and the under surface of the upper section, A, are provided with Vshaped grooves b, which, when the two parts are in juxtaposition with each other, resemble a diamondshaped recess. The upper section, A, fits snugly down upon the upper face of the lower section, A, which is provided with two threaded bolts, '0, one at each end, which project up through suitable holes or openings in the ends of the upper section, A, and are provided at their upper ends with thumbscrews (1, as shown.
In connecting the several parts together the upper section, A, is taken off and the handle 0 dropped down in the central hole or opening, a, in the lower section until its enlarged end rests snugly in the same. The diamondshaped pick 15 is then adjusted in place in the \l-shaped slot, and the upper section, A, being replaced upon the bolts 0, the thumbscrews are turned until all the parts are firmly held together.
By means of; my improvements dull or broken picks may readily be removed and sharp or new ones substituted in place thereof in a few moments, the handle is held securely at all times, and the construction generally admirably adapted for the purpose intended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is The herein-described niillstone-pick holder, consisting of the lower section or frame, A, provided with a central taper-ing hole, a, threaded bolts 0, thumb screws d, and V- shaped groove 1), and the upper section, A, having suitable holes for the passage of the bolts 0, and provided with the ti-shaped groove Z), in combination with the pick B and handle 0, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT I DICKSON.
Witnesses:
