UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH D. NORTON AND LEONARD M. NORTON, OF LOUDVILLE, MASS.
ATTACHMENT FOR LADDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,928, dated January 3, 1852.
Application filed October 5, 1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH D. NORTON and LEONARD M. NORTON, of Loudville, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Attachment for Ladders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention consists in providing ladders at their upper ends with a central arm clamped onto the upper rounds to act as a pivot to permit the bottom of the ladder to stand square upon the ground when the ladder is placed against any oblique or irregular object, ike the limb or crotch of a tree.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding pans in both the figures.
Figure l is a plan View of our invention; and Fig.2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on line as .r of Fig. 1.
A represents theladder, which is ofordinary construction; and B represents the arm, which is secured to the two top rounds of the ladder in the center of the rounds, as shown. The
arm may be of any suitable length, and it is secured to the rounds preferably by means of the clamp-plate c, which plate is adapted to be secured to the arm upon the opposite side of the rounds by the bolts 0e and the thumb-nuts t 2'. By this means the arm B may be removed from the ladder and replaced at pleasure.
A ladder provided with this arm may be set up against any irregular surface or object, and the arm acting as a pivot will permit both side bars ,of the ladder to find a square and firm support upon the ground.
Having thus fully described our invention,
JOSEPH DRANOES NORTON. LEONARD MARSHALL NORTON.
