LADDER PLATFORM-BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,079, dated July 16, 1889.
Application filed August 28, 1883. Serial No. 283,986. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS B. LASKEY, of Dover, in the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Ladder Platform-Bracket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrlption.
This invention relates to datform-brackets to be attached to ladders, and has for its object to provide a ladder platform-bracket which may be securely attached to a ladder and adjusted to position thereon, and which may be readily folded up when not in use.
The invention consists in a ladder platformbracket constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a rear view of a portion of a ladder, showing the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 50 50, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing platform-bracket detached and folded; and Fig. +1 is a plan View looking at the under side of the platform-bracket.
111 the construction of this invention a platform or shelf is provided having a suitable retaining device to engage a round of a ladder and a hinged brace-bar which also engages another round of the ladder and is ad just-able in length to locate the platform in horizontal position at whatever angle the ladder may be placed.
As shown, the bracket consists of a shelf or platform 1, provided on its under side with the retaining- catches 2 and 3 3,formed of metallic plates with bent ends 4 secured to shelf 1 and arranged so that a ladder-rung will extend between the catch 2 -and the catches 3 3. At the edge of the shelf 1 is secured a plate 5, bent up over the edge of the shelf and having hinged thereto the brace-bar (3, formed at its outer end with a hook 7 to engage a ladder-round.
The bar 6 is adjustable in length in any suitable manner, and, as here shown, is formed with the short portion 8 and the long portion 9, the end of the latter overlapping the short portion 8. The overlapping surfaces are formed with serrations 10, which prevent the parts from slippingon each other, and are held together by a pin 8 in the short portion 9, projecting through a slot 11 in the portion 9, and having a thumb-nut 12. The hook 7 is provided with a guard to keep the hook in place on a round,which consists of an L-shaped plate 13, sliding on the portion 9, and having a pin 14 projecting through a slot 15 in the portion J, and having athumbnut 16.
When the bracket is not in use, the bar (3 may be folded up against the shelf 1, as shown in Fig. \Vhen the bracket is to be used, the shelf 1 is placed on the round 17 of aladder, as shown in Fig. 1, the catch 2 depending on one side of the round and the catches 3 on the other side, the hook 7 is engaged with the next round 17 above, the plate 13 slid up against the same, and the thumb-nut 16 tightened. If the ladder is inclined at such an angle that the shelf 1 is not level, the thumb-nut 12 is loosened and the serrated parts of portions 9 and 8 moved over each other, the pin 8, sliding in the slot 11, until the shelf 1 is level, when the thumb-nut 12 is tightened. In this way a bracket shelf or plat-form may be securely fastened to the rounds on any part of a ladder, and will afford an easy and firm foot-ing for masons, painters, carpenters, and others,including persons picking fruit.
\Vhile I have described a specific construction of parts, I do not intend to limit myself thereto, as the parts may be varied without departing from the essential features of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,.is
1. A ladder platform-bracket consisting of a platform with means for engaging it with the round of a ladder, and a brace-bar hinged to the platform, said bar provided with ahook 17 at its free end adapted to engagealadderround, and an adjustable guard fitted on said end, said guard consisting of an L-shaped plate 13, sliding on the portion 9 of the hinged bar, and having a pin 11 projecting through a slot 15 in said barand secured in position by thumb-nut 16, as and for the purposes specified.
