Application filed March 13,1894- Serial No. 503,412. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE WILKINS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ladder Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved ladder attachment, which is simple and durable in construction, and arranged to permit the operator to conveniently and rapidly raise long and heavy ladders without much exertion on his part.
The invention consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims. l
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

is a like view of the same as used. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the improvement with part in section; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line f 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Theimprovedladderattachmentis provided with an anchor A preferably made in sections B, B, connected with each other by a sleeve 0, the said sections being preferably L-shaped, and having their armsB B respectively, engaged by the sleeve 0, so as to permit of widening the anchor A to accommodate wider or narrower ladders. The sleeve 0 fastens the two arms B and B together by a set screw 0' screwing in the sleeve and thesaid sleeve is formed with an extension 0 to form a handle to permit the operator to conveniently raise and lower the anchor A, as hereinafter more fully described. The side arms of the sections B and B are pivotally connected at D to the inner faces of the side beams of the ladder E, near the lower end thereof, as plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The sections B and B are provided at or near their'corners with teeth or prongs F adapted to engage the ground as illustrated in Fig. 2, or any otherfixed object, to steady the lower end of the ladder when raising the same.
I when the anchor is notin use then it is swung upward between the side beams of the ladder E, and in order to hold the anchor A in position, a catch is provided preferably of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the
said catch consisting of a plate Gr fastened to the inside of one of the beams of the ladder E, and provided with lugs G and G between which passes the side arm of the section B. The rear lug G is rounded,while the other lug G is square, the formerlug permitting the side arm of the section B to pass over its face intothe space between the lugs G and G the latter preventing an outward swinging of the anchor, owing to its square form.
soon as the ladder is raised and placed in proper position against the house or other building or object, the operator takes hold of the handle 0 on the sleeve 0, and pulls the anchor A upward, to finally engage the side arm of the section B, in the catch between the lugs G and G It will beseen that the anchor A is then completely out of the way of the operator usingthe ladder. See Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-w 1 1. The combination with a ladder, of a bail shaped anchor having the ends of its side members hinged to the inner faces of the side beams of the ladder near the lower end thereof, the said anchor being provided at or near the junction of the side members and the connecting bar with teeth or prongs to on gage the ground or other fixed object when the anchor is swung downward, and a catch fastened to the inside of one of the beams of the ladder and adapted to engage said anchor when the latter is swung upward and hold the same between the side beams of the lad der, substantially as shown and described.
2. A ladder attachment, comprising sections adjustable upon each other to conform to ladders of different widths, the said sections having side arms adapted to be hinged on the lower end of a ladder, and teeth or p rongs held on the said sections and adapted to engage the ground or other fixed object, substantially as shown and described.
3. A ladder attachment provided with an anchor comprising two L-shaped sections, a
sleeve for connecting the adjacent arms of the sections with each other, the side arms of the said sections being pivoted on the lower end of the ladder, and prongs or teeth held on the said sections, substantially as shown and described.
4. A ladder attachment provided with an anchor comprising two L-shaped sections, a sleeve for connecting the adjacent arms of the sections with each other, the side arms of the said sections being pivoted on the lower object, substantially as shown and described.
